Expansion at Miami University

Miami University of Ohio's Panhellenic is discussing expanding to allow another sorority by 2006! Thoughts, ideas, requests? We currently have:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Gamma Delta
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Mu
Pi Beta Phi
Zeta Tau Alpha

We expanded last fall with Phi Mu, and Alpha Epsilon Phi closed this year.

If I remember correctly, when I was a student in the early 80s, Miami had a chapter of all 26 NPC groups and all were large chapters, although not as large as they are today so whoever was chosen would be reactivating a dormant chapter. That is always special.

I am pretty sure that DPhiE has never colonized at Miami University of Ohio.

I'm not sure that we have either, unless Miami went by another name. I could be wrong though.

I DO however, hope that Phi Sig will be in the running!! What a great opportunity!

dphie and phi sig were both in the running when phi mu was chosen.

mel, do you know why they are expanding when not all chapters are at total?

This is what I originally thought too but I've talked with the greek advisor here at UNCC and he says that it is up to the local Panhellenic to deceided if there is a need for a new NPC organization on the campus. Basically, he said that it was not necessary for all chapters to be at total in order to invite another one to colonize. I do believe he consulted the green book...

One of Panhellenic's goals is to make chapter sizes smaller for closer sisterhood, thus bringing in another sorority. Although I think it would be great to have another chapter on campus, I think it might harm the smaller chapters.

that's exactly what i'm worried about. especially with three chapters closing in the past 4 years.

What other chapters have recently closed?

mu_agd 04-29-2004 09:09 PM

ASA and Sigma Kappa both closed while i was there.

What The??

125 fewer women going through rush, 3 chapters lost in 4 years, chapters not at total and they want to expand??? This just sounds bad all around and like it would definitely kill the smaller chapters. Unless they don't give a crap about that.

and yes, I am bitter much LOL.

what is total there currently? is panhellenic hoping to decrease the total? if there are lots of houses under total, and so many recent closings, then it makes sense to lower total without bringing on a new group....and seeing how that affects the chapters currently at the school. that is just my two cents.

I believe AEPhi is closing at the end of the school year. Also Zeta recolonized (successfully) before SK closed.

penguintpa_lady 04-29-2004 11:19 PM

have they started looking into certain orgs yet????

ADqtPiMel 04-29-2004 11:42 PM

I'm not sure exactly what total is, but all but one of the sororities are above total. All of the chapters are strong, but very large. Kappa, ADPi, and DG all have around 190 members, and the other chapters aren't too far behind.

I personally am a little concerned that expansion may harm the sorority that isn't at total, especially since they have improved so much in recruitment lately. However, I don't think that Phi Mu's expansion in 2003 negatively affected other chapters.

I don't think they've started looking into specific groups as of yet.
