Lipstick Lesbian? What is it?
 

I have heard the phrase before but was curious what it actually meant. . .

Does it mean Gay, Bi, Experimental or what?

Whats its history?

I thought it was the opposite of a "butch" lesbian, a lesbian who wears make up, tries to look nice all the time, takes pride in her appearance, etc. But I don't really know, I just heard that once from a gay friend like 6 years ago. I may be wrong.

My understanding has always been that they are lesbians that are more feminine in appearance (as opposed to the "butch" type).

It's the opposite of a butch lesbian. "Lipstick lesbians" are more feminine in their appearance.

The first time I heard this phrase was about Genesis from the Real World Boston.

It's a lesbian who likes to be a bit more "girlie" and wear makeup and is maybe more into fashion than a more "butch" lesbian... kinda another way to say a gay women is "femme" vs. butch.

Around here, lipstick lesbian has always meant those lesbians whom you wouldn't think were lesbians based solely on their appearance.

"But they look like they're making themselves beautiful for the boys! They shave their legs, they can't be lesbian!" etc.
