How does an NPHC chapter come into existence?

I'm picking on the DST forum because of your expansion to Jamaica (congratulations, btw :) )

I'm curious to know what the expansion process is like for NPHC orgs. At a university, would the university invite the GLO to colonize or would the GLO establish a chapter that would then seek recognition by the school? Could a local org become a chapter of an NPHC org? How would the process differ for a citywide chapter?

I hope asking this question isn't straying too close to the prohibition against discussing membership selection. I'm not asking how the specific chapter founders are chosen; I'm curious about the general process.

Thanks :)

Thanks for the congratulations.

The process, most likely, differs for each organization as well as the university that the organization is looking to become a part of. I do not have personal experience with bringing a chapter to a campus, so perhaps one of my sorors can enlighten you a little further about Delta seeking a charter at a university. But there definitely has to be interest. :)

to answer your question aephi alum, there has to be interest on the campus and there has to be an alumnae chapter in the area to provide the technical assistance, support and guidence the interest have. Once DST Grand Chapter has approved the establishment of the chapter and membership, the new members must seek recognition from the univeristy.

hope this helps, its as general as I get.

Hope ya'll don't mind

I've never heard of a university seeking out an NPHC chapter to come to their campus. Usually its the other way around.

Membership in NPHC is not allowed on a local level. However, there are campuses that have allowed organizations (I've seen it with Latino/a organizations where there is no Multicultural Greek Council) to be members despite the fact that it goes against NPHC constitution. There are only 9 organizations recognized by the council and there is a very detailed process by which an organization can become an affliate.

I'm confused about the question on city-wide chapters.

But what about, for example, local sorority Beta Beta Beta wanting to become a chapter of say Zeta Phi Beta?

With NPC chapters local sororitues can petition an NPC organization to become one of their chapters. My chapter of Pi Beta Phi was founded this way. We started off as a local called Delta Sigma Chi.

edited for spelling

She is referring to how do NPHC ORGS have chapters born. I will edit the title for clarity.

So basically, how does a DST, AKA, ZPB, SGR, APA, KAP, OPP, Iota, or Sigma chapter get born on a university campus.

Oh and Epitome, definitely don't mind. I cannot enlighten her on the process of how a Zeta chapter comes to XYZ State University but you and your sorors can.

Oh but it has happened, especially when a campus is trying to reach out to African American students. The presence of NPHC orgs is a good marketing tool.

Re: City-wide. For Delta, this usually happens when there are a number of schools within a city and no one school can support a chapter alone. In this case, the chapter also does not need school approval to be chartered, but it is helpful if one or all of the schools recognize it as a student organization for the purpose of using facilities for events, etc. The collegiate chapter here in the Twin Cities is a city-wide chapter that encompasses about eight schools.

As far as I know no local sorority has ever become an NPHC group. I don't even think we have (again older sorors correct me if I'm wrong) a way to transform them into our orgranizations. If someone wants to start a chapter, at least of Delta, they need to have enough interest on the campus and the proper assistance from an alumnae chapter to get that done and it is a LONG process.

Thanks for the info! :)

CT4, that's exactly what I was asking, sorry I wasn't more clear.
