Holocaust Remembrance
 

In the US it was Sunday the 18th.

Today Holocaust remembrance and Heros day was celebrated in Israel.

For two minutes a very loud horn rings - traffic stops immediately on highways and people get out of their cars - we remember not only the murdered, but the heroes who fought back.

I remember my Grandmother and her parents today, may they rest in peace.

My Great-Grandparents both perished in the camps, one to gas, one to disease.
My Grandmother survived, emigrated to the U.S.A., and lived to tell her story to as many people as she could until her death a few short years ago.

Today, I leave for Air Force Basic Training, the day we remember Holocaust Victims. Next week, is Yom Ha'atzmut, Israel's Independence Day. In 6 weeks, I graduate from Basic Training on the weekend of my Grandmother's Birthday, June 6 - 60 years after she recieved the best birthday present of her life (though she didn't find out about it for months later) - Allied Invasion of Europe.





Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.

May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.

Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

Definitely the most horrific act of western society in modern history. Unbelievable that there are many individuals out there that deny any of it ever occured.

All of my direct ancestors were in the U.S. when the holocaust happened. About 15 years ago, I met, for the first time, a cousin who survived the holocaust. Her parents did not. It makes you think.

The Holocaust should not be remembered because something bad happened to one group of people. The Holocaust should be remembered because it could happen again, and it could happen to any group of people.

Great post and food for thought! Slavery and the Holocaust were the most horrible events in our history. As Russ said, these events did not happen to just one group of people...it is a crock when people do the "we had it worse than you guys"...that is BS. Both events were horrible and we need to learn from them. Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it!

Oppression and mass genocide go on every day all around the world. What a shame it is that so many people ignore and deny it as well. Will it again be 50 years before the plight of these other suffering people will be heard as well?

While it is great to acknowledge that this is something that can happen again, the Holocaust is uniquely Jewish. I don't understand why people feel the need to pile together all the wrongs in the world as if none can stand on their own. Please take that into account. Thanks.

The Holocaust should be remembered for both reasons.

The Jewish people are still recovering from this attempt at genocide. Six million is not a small number. And the Jews were not the only ones targeted - Gypsies, homosexuals, and anyone who helped these people hide or escape were also marched off to the camps.

Sadly, the potential exists for something like this to happen again, with possibly a much larger death toll. That is a part of why we remember - to work towards making sure it does not happen again.
