SK for life..maybe not??

Have any of you checked out the proposed amendments that will be voted on at Convention??
What are your thoughts??

BaylorBean 04-19-2004 09:09 AM

Your post prompted me to download them and read through them. I was happy to see that they are adding a 25 year pin. As the title of your post implies I assume you are refering to the amendment about expulsion of alumna members? I have mixed feelings about this. One side agrees because you are a Sigma Kappa for life and not just durring college so it would make sense that you could get expelled durring any time. On the other hand, I don't think its a very clear amendment. They need to set some ground rules of the basis for alumna expulsion. Obviously some of the reasons for expulsion at the active member stage and at the alumna stage are going to be different. Hmmm, I see this causing some controversy at convention.
Oh I also don't like the new purpose. I don't know why, there is just something about how its worded.

I couldn't find where to download the proposed ammendments...I assume they are in the Sisters Only section? I logged in but still couldn't find them-help?

Go to the monthly mail section in Sisters Only and choose April. You will see a link for a PDF form of the Amendments.
Hope that helps!

Wow...very interesting -- thanks for sharing. Please let us know how it turns out at Convention.

The proposed amendment doesn't say on what grounds an alumnae can be expelled. I can see the grounds for expulsion for alumnae being much more severe than a collegiate(i don't think alumnae will be expelled for not paying dues). I'm sure this will be a big topic of debate at convention and I'm sure nationals has good reasoning behind the amendment.

I am curious if any other national GLO has a bylaw like this.

Alpha Xi Delta's bylaws provide that National Council can suspend the membership of an alumna who engages in conduct contrary to the best interests of the Fraternity. It's seldom done, but is done from time to time. Really, there's no other recourse when you have alums who, for instance, come back and haze new members -- they have no business wearing our Quill. We've had this provision for years, and are very comfortable with it. Hope your discussions go well!

Possible reasons

Someone metioned that the act would have to be more severe than something an active collegian could do, and it made me think of something that happened a few years ago. There was an alumnae serving on an advisory board who was later arrested for embezzling money from the board of a period of time. The woman faced legal charges so I think our own govering body would want to protect things like this from happening. just my thoughts..

Wow....that is an interesting amendment. I'm curious as to what incident(s) prompted someone to propose an alumna expulsion amendment  I agree with BalorBean that the amendment is very vauge. I would assume it would have to be something serious like stealing money from the chapter or hazing members as others have suggested. Or maybe they want it to be vague because they aren't sure what to expect.
On a side note....I too am happy about the 25 year pin and it's design sounds lovely.

Aquastar 05-10-2004 09:38 AM

I believe it can also be used for people who leave the school (and are therefor alum) and are not in good "financial" standings with the chapter ...
