How come the sororities can not get along?
Why are sororities so catty and bitchy towards other sororities? The fraternities on my campus get along better than the sororities. The guys can hang out at each other's fraternity houses and not get in problems. For examle, one fraternity were throwing horse shoe and invited others for good greek relations.
There are only 5 panhellenic sorority on my campus and yet some of treat each other so bad. There are even rivalaries (not sure of the spelling) against two or more. I don't know maybe it's just my campus or just girls in general, but it make greek life, no make that sorority life look bad. Why would someone want to join a sorority if they have to deal with this. |
huh, kind of feels the opposite at my school.
lots of examples of great panhellenic sisterhood, but i've noticed a lot of subtle resentment between some fraternities. i think rivalries are bound to occur when we're all pitted against each other to have the best grades, the best involvement, the most spirit, to be the best all around chapter. but i think these rilvaries are ok, because it in turn promotes the higher standards of scholarship and service. but i'm guessing you aren't talking friendly competition to have the highest chapter gpa... |
We have times where we get along great with one sorority, and recently we've become really close to our rivals (because of an unfortunate incident that was against us). There are three of us Panhel sororities, and one engineering.
Now the fraternities are a different story. There are two social and one engineering. The engineers get along with almost everyone. The two social... well... some of them are friends because of the lacrosse team, and the others talk more shit behind each others' backs that they would shame a girl. I go to school in Michigan too. :) |
When groups are pitted against each other, there always has to be a winner and a loser. Competetion is a natural occurance, if we like it or not.
I think you'll find that not every campus is the same in the "hating" aspect. Even with the fraternities. We've had boys sent to the hospital during Greek Week for cheap shots in street hockey or flagernt fouls during basketball games. While the girls didn't send anyone to the hospital, we are vicious on a whole nother level (and I say we as in girls in general). While there has been anamostiy towards certian panhel groups, other groups can get along. I also feel this happens on a personal level as well. IE, one of my close friends is ABC. I hate her sorority, as a whole, for things they have done to me and my sisters. But I still love her to death. |

On my campus we have 6 NPC sororities, and we all get along just fine. We support each other's philanthropies, we support the chapters when sometimes things don't go right, and we even support each other during recruitment. The fraternities on the other hand, may be a different story. |

most of the fraternities get along... but one of the nationals and one of the locals hate each other and are always fighting with one another... its pretty scary- and i have boys in both orgs so sometimes we get stuck in the middle... ir eally hate it- and sometimes the fighting is "valid" as in- i can see why they were upset or whatever- but i don't think it should have turned physical... its stressful and often reminds me of high school.... i guess it just comes with the territory though... the only thing to do is to try to not get involved... |
There was good-hearted competition...
among the groups when I was an undergrad, which I have to say improved each year as I progressed through college.
I loved being the Panhellenic delegate as an undergrad, and have found now that I am out in the "world" when I meet greeks from other orgs there is that instant mutual bond that I just love. When I was an undergrad there were these "Delta Delta Delta" skits on Saturday Night Live that poked good natured fun at sororities and there was one skit where they came to the realization that after college their affiliation doesn't matter...it was funny, but kind of made us all look so shallow...like we identified ourselves only by our GLO. I have tried to promote the Greek system in general to any young person going to college...it's the best way to go!!!! |
whoa, please change the font size on your sig... your whole sig can't even fit on my screen w/o scrolling
:) |
Sororities can be so dumb to each other. Whenever there is competition (for pnms, intramurals, sing) whatever, there is going to be stupidity involved. For the entire four years I was at Baylor we had numerous run ins with one other GLO in particular. They always told people we were getting kicked off campus, told pnms during recruitment that they should not go back to our party bc we were leaving the next year anyway, etc. Naturally, it created a severe dislike towards this group that I will probably carry with me for a long time. I remember one flag football game in particular, the director of intramurals almsot called the game in the 2nd quarter, that's how bad it got. Seriously, I wasn't even playing and some of my sisters had to hold me back bc one of their girls nearly took off our president's head.

It's by school. The sororities here get along GREAT. As a matter of fact, my ZTA friend just burned the pan of my XO friend, hehe....She's a horrible cook. My XO friend just shook her head, and told her to buy new pans of course...lmbo
But yeah, it depends on the climate of the school. What happens outside Greek life seeps into Greek life, it's nothing new. I guarantee it isn' that SORORITIES don't get along, it's that women on your CAMPUS don't get along. You pick from what's available. |
Sorry about the sig...
Aggg! Sorry about the sig font...it was really big and I didn't realize I had made a mistake...

I WISH...
I wish we had more compition with GLOS during my years at S.F.S.U. F$#K we did not even have a Greek week:confused: . It is funny that so many orgs. had problems with one another, but why is the question. I think it may of had to do with RUSH practices becuase it's not like there was anything else competitive. Oh, maybe it could of been how some orgs. were founded for example "Z$#A"-wait I'll keep that hush, hush, but ya'll know what I mean.

Honestly, from what I can tell, the sororities get along great here. Lot's of Panhellenic Spirit and stuff. All the orgs. have their fair share of pride in themsemles, but that's to be expected.
The fraternities are another story. Most of them co-exist peacefully. The top 3 houses here (Sigma Chi, Delt, Sig Ep, Phi Delt) have had their little tiffs from time to time (so I've been told). |

Talk to your Greek Adviser and Panhellenic about creating a more hospitable atmosphere through group programming and events that give the groups a chance to interact. There could be unhealthy competitions and traditions in place that discourage good relations. |
Sorry I just realized how horrible I sounded in my last post, it just makes me mad to think about it still. Most of the time, our chapters got along great, with the occasional spat here and there. We actually had a great relationship with a couple of the other sororities, and did some mixer type stuff with them. Anyway, sorry for the negative attitude, it just makes my blood boil to this day!!!
