"Going Greek" movie

Going Greek

I was browsin' through The Movie Gallery the other day, grabbing movies left and right to take advantage of their 99cent new releases promotion and I came across the movie Going Greek... Well you should never judge a book by its cover, so despite the pictures and description, I decided to watch it and come up with a real conclusion of my own...

The description of the movie is: College freshman Jake finds himself pledging the wildest fraternity on campus as a bid to help his geeky cousin get in. Along the way, he finds himself in a romance with a girl who hates fraternities--and as the raunchy tests to get in get wilder and wilder, Jake actually finds himself enjoying the ride.

Wellll I just finished watching it and I had mixed feelings on the movie... First of all, 90% of Greek life which the movie shows are very graphic examples of extreme hazing.. This includes branding, kidnapping, scavenger hunts, getting the sh*t beat out of each other, among many others...

Attempting to look past this, this movie is about Jake, a star high school quarterback who in hopes of breaking a record, let down his friend and ended up also hurting himself, losing his scholarship to big college... He goes to another college where he finds himself rooming with his cousin. The cousin is a bit of a nerd and is all about joining this one fraternity on campus... Apparently he's a legacy..
Anyway, somehow Jake promises to go through rush with his cousin even though he doesnt want to, meets a girl who hates fraternities and ends up pledging because he is told that if he doesn't join, (he is needed for football) then his cousin doesn't get in... He sees this as an opportunity to make up for letting his old friend down and toughs it out through 'hell week' and other abusive events..

I must admit that this was quite a funny movie, despite the stereotypical approach it uses to show greek life... It also attempts to show togetherness and brotherhood as the pledges all stick together to help each other out...

Other than that I don't really know what else to say.. has anyone else seen this movie? What are your opinions? Many of you guys would be shocked, thats for sure...

Well whether it's hilarious or not...if it supports the stereotypes, I don't think I care to watch it.

Not to worry. I've seen the movie, curious about that as well when I saw the cover (one of my best friends is a Chi-O), but the back clearly states that the fraternity is called Iota Chi Omega and the fraternity is commonly referred to as "I-Chi" in the movie.

Come on guys...there have been 234298423 movies made that were either about greeks or starred greeks or whatever. It's meant to entertain...this is not a big deal.

i thought "sorority boys" was hilarious, and "old school" is the best movie ever made. I saw some B-level movie in blockbuster called 'delta delta DIE' once...hehe thought that was probably not the most quality movie lol.

I was thinking the same thing too when i saw it. but if you look closely at the paddle he is holding, there is an Iota on it. Not that it makes a difference.

The colors of Iota Chi Omega were definitely red and yellow as well...and many of the shots in the movie showed just the Chi and Omega. My boyfriend took great fun in pointing all of them out  Although I must say, the movie did crack me up!

Not saying it is a big deal.. I'm not suggesting we protest or anything... I just watched the movie and thought I'd share my opinions and see what others thought. :)

Cuz he's waiting for you.

I've wanted to see this. When did it actually come out? Maybe I'll rent that tonite!

Also, maybe a Chi Omega had something to do with the production/writing of the film? It could be a possibility.

Because that's the best way to promote the movie!

And besides, that's how you take paddle pictures.
