Agriculture question

I'm not sure if I should be here on this board or not as I do not hold memership in any GLO. As a matter of fact this is the first time I've gotten up the nerve to post anywhere on Greek Chat although I am loosing it. Anyway, I was wondering if you AG ladies can answer a stupid question for me. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but no one that I know personally can give me more then their guess. Any takers to humor this uneducated city girl?

Hey! I'm willing to help. Just be patient with me because I may not know the answer and I may have to search it out for you!

The question

Okay, here goes... I was at the grocery store a few weeks ago and went to get some eggs. While I was looking for the kind I usually buy I saw a box labeled "vegtarian fed hen eggs." That seemed really silly at the time. But the more I thought about it I started to wonder about it. Do they taste different? Are they healther to eat? I've checked with friends and family but even those who farm don't know for sure. I thought I'd ask you guys before I made a fool of myself by calling any organizations in my area. Just incase someone there knows me.

Curiosity got the better of me on this one because I just don't get it and I hope to start back to college soon to study food and nutrition so I'm interested in it. So now it's in my head and it won't leave.

Thank you for your time. :)

I have no idea and have never heard of these kind of eggs before, free range yes, but vegitarian no...I am curious too now

At first it seemed like an oxymoron... because some consider an egg a part of the meat group. I have talked it over with some friends and relatives (who already think I'm goofy) and they came up with some intersting theories. Like taste or maybe they are healthier. A relative who farms and a long time ago raised poultry thought maybe the hens ate organic feed and because of that they didn't injest any bugs or worms or meat products. That way the vegtarians who do eat eggs won't get meat from eating these eggs? I just don't get it!

At first I kind of joked about it but now I really want to know.

Hey! I did a little bit of snooping for you. I typed in "vegetarian fed hen eggs" to google and several websites came up. I chose to use the information from the Egg Nutrition Center because they are probably the most impartial source on the subject. Here's what they had to say:

"Vegetarian eggs and organic eggs are available from hens fed either feed free of animal by products or feed grown without pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, or commercial fertilizers, respectively."

As far as how healthy they are, that's up for debate. You may get the contact info for the company and ask them. Hope this helps you some!

Thank you so much

Thank you for the info. I have checked out some websites and didn't get anywhere. With that mystery solved, if I could only find out what my dryer does to one of my pair of socks life would be good. LOL Again Thank you!
