Alpha Gam in the Quill!

Hey ladies - pardon the board crash.

Just wanted to share with ya'll that your International President, Suzanne Carmack Spicer, was featured in our latest edition of the Quill! She sent a letter in to the editor commenting on how pleased she was to see us mention another Alpha Gam in an article that featured the history of our coat of arms (the article mentions how Emily Butterfield was hired to help us complete its design and get it to conform to the laws of heraldry).

Just thought you'd like to know!!! :)

Panhellenically,
Donna

Donna, thanks for sharing! Emily Butterfield was not only one of our Founders, but she was THE foremost expert on fraternal heraldry in her time. I'm glad that she was able to put her talents to good use by helping other sororities and fraternities.

If you have the time, and if you don't mind...is there an online link somewhere so we can see the article and Suzanne's letter? Or could you do a copy and paste for us? I'd like to see what was written! :)

Sorry, no link. We were actually discussing the other night how we would love to see our Quill go online.

I'll type out what was said in the letter (it's fairly short):

Panhellenic Spirit

I read with great interest the article "Alpha Xi Delta's Artwork of Heraldry" in the summer 2003 issue of The Quill. The intricacies of heraldic symbols, colors and placement of componenets are quite fascinating.
The article mentioned that Emily Butterfield was hired to complete revisions to the original design of Alpha Xi Delta's coat of arms, and that she had done similar work for other men's and women's fraternal organizations. This information is especially significant to Alpha Gamma Delta, as Emily is one of our 11 Founders and a renowned authority on heraldry. As Alpha Gamma Delta begins the observance of our centennial year, we are pleased that one of our Founders is recognized once again for her expertise in heraldry.

Interfraternally,
Suzanne Carmack Spicer
Alpha Gamma Delta International President

The original article was printed in the Summer 2003 issue, but unfortunately, our past issues on the website are only current through Summer 2002. I'll post the link though, in case it gets updated sometime: Past Quills

Thank you so much for typing that out! We really appreciate it, Donna! :)

How nice...

That is so nice that EHB is recognized in other greek circles.

My chapter had the last hand-drawn charter (I believe) by EHB before her death.

We didn't get to have it out all the time as the alums were very afraid that a fraternity would steal it as a prank or something.

It is very beautiful and how exciting to have something done by a founders hand.

I am all boo-hooey today thinking about Alpha Gam's 100 years.
