Before you get into a car...
This has been bothering me for a while, and I haven't spoken up for fear of looking "old", but I can't keep quiet anymore.
It seems that a week doesn't go by on GreekChat that someone from a GLO isn't killed in a car accident. Most of the newspaper stories mention that the deceased was not wearing their seatbelts. We all know that both Princess Grace and Princess Diana died in car accidents - neither wearing their seat belts. Obviously, being a princess - real or imagined - is no guarantee against not needing a seat belt! Ladies, whether you're on a date, distracted, on a cell phone, drinking coffee, or even laughing with friends, having that seat belt on WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE!!!! So often I worry that the next tragedy will be one of our sisters, and I care about each and every one of you. We live for each other, you know! Please, I beg you - each and every time that you get into a car, please take that extra minute and buckle up. It could well mean the difference between a bruised abdomen and your parents having to decide whether or not your organs should be donated. And if that makes me sound old, or preachy, or overprotective, so be it. I love you too much to let you die needlessly!! |
hear hear! I was in a serious car accident when I was 19. My friends and I were headed to the freeway when we were hit by a drunk driver, spun off-road and totaled the car. I was in the hospital for a week. I had internal bleeding, some broken ribs and a nice chunk of skin scraped away. I ended up spending a summer in physical therapy. You know how I am alive to tell the story and why 3 doctors have told me I'm so incredibly lucky?
I was wearing my seatbelt! |
Honey,
I wholeheartedly AGREE. My last summer in college one of my sisters and a friend (the twin sister of one of our sisters) were killed in a car accident. Two people who normally wouldn't pull out of a parking space without seatbelts were killed on their way home by a drunk driver. I pray that no chapter, family or community every have to go through that experience. It was a senseless accident and now three lives are over, Lisa, Meagan and the guy who hit them. So please wear your seatbelts and whenever you go out, please have a designated driver and be aware of the drivers around you. . . Article about the accident HC- you're neither old or preachy! |
I was also saved by a seatbelt.
My big SUV was completely totaled and both airbags in my car went off, but I was able to walk away. WEAR A SEATBELT!!! |
Awesome post honeychile!

People sometimes make fun of me because I wear my seatbelt even when I am in the back seat!
Thank you for the caring message, Honey! |
My 12 year old cousin died 4 years ago in a car accident because she wasn't in a seatbelt and my uncle has severe permanent brain damage as a result of not wearing his. Yea, they are important.
