How do you deal with people who lie?
How do you deal with people who lie? Do you just stop listening to them, do you try to uncover their lies, or do you try to reminded them to tell the truth?
Me personally I just stop listening to them and I don't take anything they say to heart. You can not believe anything that comes out of their mouths. I just smile and say that's nice and go back to what I was doing before they called or stopped by. If you are one of those complusive liars why do you do it? Why don't you just tell the truth? I'm sure the truth would be a lot easier for you in the end. |
people have boundaries (or not).
Check out this link. generally about setting limits and sticking to them. But always make them something you're able to deliver on.   |
If someone's lying is that excessive to the point that it really bothers me, I stop associating with that person. I mean, I don't actually say, "You lie like a rug--so screw you! Don't talk to me!" You know what I mean. That's how I "deal" with people like that...it's really tempting to play Mother Teresa and try to overlook things and change them, but it's just more trouble than it's worth. Fortunately, I've only run into a person like this twice in my life, so to me that says good things about most peoples' honesty. :)

I called someone out as a liar once. It wasn't pleasant so I don't recommend it. I was just sick of her looking me straight in the face and lying to me. The next liar I met I just ignored.

Call them on it (Iowahawkeye, anyone?)
Nothing in this world pisses me off more. If they're little white lies I just ignore the person and give them as little attention as I can, since that's what they're looking for. |

I have an acquaintance that seems to be a pathological liar. I like to play games with her and catch her in her own lies. My other friends do the same thing with her. (She dates one of my husband's best friends, so the wives/other girlfriends of my husbands friends join in with me when we all hang out!)
What's really bad is that she tells OBVIOUS lies that can be verified with little or no effort. |
I use lying as a defense-to cover my ass whenever I'm being interrogated. So if I lie to someone, they deserve it.
According to what I learned in my interpersonal comm class there are four types of lies: pro-social (lying to cover SOMEONE else's ass), self-protective, self-serving, and anti-social. I could care less if someone lies to cover their own ass or someone else's ass. In fact I think it is a little shady to call someone out on those types of lies. I don't care about self-serving lies either, as long as their lies won't hurt me. However, if someone lies at someone else's expense, I will call them out on it. |
