What is "Chapter?"
I have a pledge who went to GTech and was in with the Theta Xi's. She said there would be certain days where every greek would have to go to "chapter" Does anyone know what that is???
|
When we say "going to chapter" it means attending our chapter meetings. On the two campuses I've been on, those were Monday nights.
|
Chapter met first on Tuesdays and then during my last semester we moved everything (including Chapter council) to Monday.
EC is still held on Sundays (but probably not for long!). |
So basically all the greeks had chapter meeting at the same time on the same day? Okay, she, the pledge was wondering what it was too. Thanks!

We had "chapter" (chapter meeting) the same night each week, but it did not coincide with any other sorority/fraternity meeting on purpose. I don't think all the chapters have their meetings on the same day, but I could be wrong.

To expand, Chapter Meetings are weekly business meetings. It's a time where the the chapter officers can give announcements, rewards or programs to all the chapter members and where the chapter members can find out all the information regarding going-ons that they need for the current and upcoming weeks.
Most often, it's conducted in proper business format, with the President presiding and members (sometimes) using Parliamentary Procedure and/or Robert's Rules of Order. It's also one of the main times that all or nearly all chapter members are gathered together in one place at one time so it's a great opportunity for other people from other orgs to come and talk to the chapter. The day and time for Chapter meetings are decided on by each individual org. Many do have them on Sundays or Mondays, but it can change to best fit the schedules of all members. So: ABC and RST could have chapter on Mondays at 6, DEF could have chapter on Sundays at 5, JLK could have chapter on Wednesdays at 8 and XYZ could have chapter on Wednesdays at 6. |

I think the reason a lot of groups have their meetings on the same day is because that's a time the majority of people on campus are free. When I was an active, just about everybody met on Sunday nights.

We have chapter on Sunday nights.
|
Often at large schools, everyone's chapter meetings (that is what chapter is) occur on the same day so serenades and such can take place. Also so you can schedule classes accordingly, if you are rushing and have not yet joined.

All the sororities (except for Phi Mu) have chapter on Wednesday night at Auburn

By the way, having dinner before and a social right after chapter meant we had a high turnout for chapter. FYI: The campus wide chapter night changed when the SEC moved conference basketball games to Wednesday nights. |

My understanding is that in addition to SEC games on Wednesday nights, the "mid-week" mixers went away due to risk management issues. Thus there is no longer a need to have the chapter meetings all on the same night. By the way, are Thursdays still the big weeknight for going out? Like to Two Keys. :D |

I don't know about SEC games, but I know there were always times when everyone was in a big hurry for chapter to get over, so they could go get in line for the ticket lottery for the bball games. The lotteries always seem to be on Monday nights. You can never make everyone happy when it comes to when chapter is, it seems! |
