uw fraternity for me???
 

To all the fraternity men at Univ. of Wisconsin and elsewhere...


Im going to be a freshmen this fall and Im seriously considering joining a fraternity. Just some things stand in my way. For one: Will it take alot of time away from my roommate and other friends. What are some cool fraternities on campus that you think i should rush. And whats the case with the fraternity throwing parties...are most of them going dry now or what???

Please help me out. Any advice, even irrelevent to the subject but pertaining to fraternity life would help me dearly.

We see posts like this all the time - rather than hear from others, find out for yourself - go through rush at each chapter/colony on campus - your perceptions on the organization best for you is more valuable than others opinions. This is the best way to make the decision, after all, it will affect you for your entire lifetime. Choose wisely.

As for parties, please understand that while parties seem to be the big draw in the past, things are changing. This is mainly due to the fact they were such a big draw - they created too many risk management issues that greeks today are having to face from greeks past. This change is beneficial to you - it is re-focusing GLO's back to their true original founding ideals...while a good social life is usually one of those ideals, greeks did stray from a "responsible" social life.

This is not to mean all fraternities are going to be "milk and cookie" boys - far from it. We are going to become the leaders of character and leadership again that we were known for in the past, and, having a good time as well.

I want to know too . . . He goes to my school! It would be fun to see where, if anywhere, he ended up.

I will drive to Madison and hunt him down.

Why? Because Platteville is boring and I'm sick of studying! ;)

Come to Oshkosh. Beta Theta Pi just did homecoming with Gamma Phi Beta, placing third. Being an alum, I only got to see the fun from my end, but from what I hear, the Gamma Phi's and the Beta's had a great time and have a few more socials planned.

PS, let me know if there are any opportunities for Fraternity Expansion at UW Platt. I am looking to get another Beta chapter going in WI. Thanks!

I don't think Pville would be the place for Beta to expand, unfortunately...I've heard great things about you guys! We have quite a few fraternities right now:

Sigma Phi Epsilon
Tau Kappa Epsilon
Sigma Pi
Phi Sigma (local)
Lambda Sigma Pi (local)
Alpha Gamma Rho
Sigma Tau Gamma
FarmHouse
Delta Sigma Phi
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia

The houses range in size from 10 - 50, I believe Sig Ep and TKE are tied for the largest. Sig Ep just came to campus about 5 years ago, they received their charter in 2000. We're really looking to expand on the women's side, if at all, because Gamma Phi is the only national right now, and we then have 2 locals and CERES.

I interviewed for the Greek Advisor position at Platteville in '99
 

I interviewed to be the Greek Advisor at Platteville almost 4 years ago. It was (and still sounds like) a really different Greek system! Platteville was just way too isolated for me (I'm a city person, but it did seem like a nice campus though. It was kind of freaky with the cemetary across from the dorms though! Also, Phi Sigma used to be one of our chapters (Phi Sigma Kappa) but elected to withdraw from the national when the Grand Council outlawed little sisters. It seems like the University has also gone through a lot of Greek Advisors since I interviewed too, everytime I go to our annual conference, it seems like there is somebody different from UW-Platteville.

The Phi Mu Alpha guys at Platteville are a great bunch, I have a relatively good friend in that chapter! I was very close with the chapter at Whitewater, and they did a lot to help out the U-Platt chapter when they were struggling. Now from what I hear,they are colonizing a chapter at UW-Madison. Go Sinfonians!

I'm noticing that Gamma Phi Beta seems to be the only national at a lot of the UW campuses, I wonder why that is....

The Gamma Phi Beta girls seem to be a real stand-up group here on the UW-Milwaukee campus. I was very interested in pledging, but since I am not a full-time student I wasn't eligible. I am in the process of trying to bring Beta Sigma Phi to the UW-M campus though!

It would have been awesome if we had you...the woman we have now has been here for two years and she doesn't really have her act together, although she is trying hard, I will give her that. One of the locals that hazes extremely extremely badly kisses up to her and told her that we haze. We do not do anything remotely close to hazing, I'm a new member, I would know! :D

And yes, it is a nice campus, although much too isolated from my liking. I'm originally from Milwaukee. The cemetary is weird too, I live in the dorms down by the cafeteria and today when I walked home I got to see somebody get buried! :(

Glad to hear that about our Gamma Gamma Chapter. :D I wish there was a chapter at Marquette still...I think that would go over well there. Our Sinfonians are great guys, and they do the best serenades! :D Did you go to Whitewater? I took summer school there this year...they have tons of locals too. I think it's a Midwest thing.

Beloit College has a local too, with a really cool story behind it -- they were founded as a local almost a hundred years ago, eventually became a chapter of Delta Gamma, and later lost their charter for trying to initiate a black woman in the 1950s! They're one of the oldest locals I know of . . . UW-Stevens Point also has a couple local sororities (and why is it that there seem to be a lot more local sororities than local fraternities?). I'm starting to think that UW-Madison must be the only campus in the state without locals!

Gamma Phi Beta has a strong chapter over here in Madison too.

Yup, I went to Whitewater for 4 years before I moved to Milwaukee! I can't think of that many locals, though.... Alpha Sigma and Tau Phi Lambda for sororities... and Phi Chi Epsilon Fraternity... are there others that have colonized since I left?

I know that Alpha Sigma is very proud of the fact that they are the oldest sorority in Wisconsin at 100+ years! :) (based on date of chapter colonization, not overall)

I just heard that Sigma Alpha was starting in intrest group in hopes of forming a chapter there! :)
