Question regarding community service?
Hello to everyone!
I have a question. I am going to be a freshman this fall. I am interested in joining a sorority (BGLO). I have heard from other messages boards and this one, that one requirement to be considered for membership is having done (and doing) community service and/or being involved in student orgs. Now, since I'm coming outta high school, I will say that I was very active there. I was a cheerleader all 4 years, ran track one year, I was in the National Honor society (I was Co-Social Chair) and I was involved in S.A.D.D (I was secretary). I also was on a special team of SADD where we went to local grade schools and talked to 5th and 6th graders about the pressures and dangers of drinking and driving and doing drugs, etc. Now, I've done all this but I haven't really done community service. We did a little in National Honor Society, but not that much. My question is, if I apply for membership for a sorority, will any of this count or do I have to do other things in the ocmmunity? Also, why can't people join or be considered for membership if they've never done comm. svc before? What if the reason they want to join a sorority is so that they CAN do service through the sorority? Why is it necessary to bring that to the table? I can understand that if you have it, it helps, but why is required? Why can't it be highly recommended instead? Ok, sorry for the rambling and I apologize if I offended anyone, I was just wondering. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
Without getting into too much detail, you need to do some more public service (community service is what judges had down as restitution). Cheerleading, track, Nat'l Honor Society and SADD (which probably most "qualifies" as public service) are all fine and good activities. The fact is the NPHC orgs are PUBLIC SERVICE organization above all else, that's why we do not consider those who haven't done any public service. How can you show us you're committed to public service if you've never done any? Don't start doing public service just because you want to become a member. Do it and continue doing it because you want to make a difference.

Sounds to me like you have a good start on community service. But like Sister Kelli said you need to get more involved! And Dear, you are just starting college...WORK ON YOUR GRADES...there is plenty of time to pursue membership in a Sorority. TRUST ME...It's a LIFETIME committment. In the meantime do some research...www.NPHC.org This site should get you started.

Hello again!
Thank you ladies for your responses. I really appreciate them. I do want to pursue membership in a sorority but I am planning on waiting until my sophomore or maybe even my junior year to do so. I know that I must work on my grades, service and just getting used to college life period before I do anything. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I have been doing a little research on the sororities via websites. I heard about a book called "The Divine Nine" and it sounds like something I should look into buying. I know I do need to research more though and I will do so as I get through my first year and so on. Again, thanks for your kind responses http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
