GLOs with suites, chapter rooms and the like

Another thread got me intrigued about GLOs chapter rooms and such. For those chapters that have suites, chapter rooms, or dorm floors; how does that work?

Do you have any university imposed restrictions? Are you allowed 24 hour access or do you have set hours? Are you allowed to "sleep over". Can you have mixers/parties/events with other groups in your suite/chapter rooms? If your chapter room is on a dorm floor, do you have to follow the university's policy for dorm housing *first*, then something else?

ETA: And any history you would like to share would be great.

This is how sorority housing is at Auburn. Every sorority has a chapter room in the basement of the dorm. We have university imposed restrictions as far as opposite sex visiting goes, as well as our own rules. We are allowed to sleep over in the room, and we have never had a mixer in the chapter room, but we do hold Parents Teas, Homecoming Teas, Bid Day Celebrations, Founders Day, etc... in the room. As far as the dorm itself, each sorority has its own dorm floor for the girls to live on. For that, we follow the university policies first, then have some of our own.

I hope this helps!

At my university we have sorority suites, which are located in the dorm. There are 5 NPC sororities on campus and 5 floors in the dorm, so each sorority has a specific floor for their members with a suite at the end of the hallway. The door to the suite has a touchpad number lock on it, in which only the sorority members know the numbers to get in. Members are offered first priority of living on their sorority floor, and then if it is not filled it is offered to any university student wanting to live in the dorm. I know that for my sorority, the rooms are always filled with Alpha Gams, so there is not anyone outside of our sorority that lives on our floor.

The university really has no imposed regulations of what we do. We have 24 hour access to the suite, and many of the girls that live in the dorm go in there to cook (we have a kitchen), study, or do chapter related activities. As far as having "sleep overs," I guess we could all stay in the suite if we wanted to (there are no rules against it), but there is honestly not enough room for 100+ girls to spend the night in there! Also, when it comes to mixers, parties, or events there is again not enough rooms for all our girls and other people to fit.

As far as I know, we have always had sorority suites, whereas the fraternities have houses. Our university is currently looking into building sorority apartments around a new sorority complex, but I'm sure that will be another 10-15 years before it ever happens :( !

At Pitt, all but 2 of the sororities are in Amos Hall, which was THE apartment complex in the 1930-40's. There are 2 full apartments on each floor, and in the past years, it's one sorority to a floor. It's treated just like any of the other dorms, security wise, but that's where the difference stops.

When you get off the elevator, each floor has a Formal end and an Informal end. There's room for 16-17 women to live in the entire suite. The formal side has a HUGE living room (I have the dimensions somewhere - 26' x 50'?) and some have fireplaces. There are 3 bedrooms on that side with connecting bathrooms, and depending on the sorority, either a chapter/dining room or another bedroom, two very small bedrooms with a small sitting area, and a pullman kitchen. The tiny bedrooms were literally for the maids!

On the other side, there is a somewhat smaller informal living room (this is usually where the TVs are), another pullman kitchen, 3 more bedrooms with connecting bathrooms, the tiny bedroom with a storage area, and again, depending on the sorority, another bedroom or a chapter room.

What's nice is each is decorated SO differently, it's fascinating! What's a pain is that the laundry facilities are on the 11th floor, so everyone has to get off on the ADPi's 10th floor & walk up to the laundry room - and spill their soap, scuff the tables/wallpaper (I hate the wallpaper! Scuff away!!), etc in the hallway. I'm sure no one means it, but it gets a little tiresome. When I was an active, we had a maid who always muttered about "those sloppy no-accounts" - you had to know her!

I'm sure there will be other descriptions!

ETA: I think there is a sign out time for visitors, but we didn't have one when I was there. The security has REALLY tightened up since I was an active - before, the ladies who buzzed you in were practically housemothers. Does anyone remember "The Honey Lady"?!?!?! :)

At the school i went to, each sorority had a suite in a dorm. there were four dorms that had suites, usually between 3-5 suites in a dorm. they consisted of a large room, a kitchen, an office, and closets. every member of the chapter had access to their own suite 24/7, they were ours. i can't remember if the university had any specific rules, but i do know that each chapter had a set of rules for their suite. we weren't allowed to have mixer-type events in the suites, but we could have chapter events in there. there was supposed to be a rule against members of the opposite sex allowed in there, but it wasn't too closely followed.

Honey, I am happy to say that I never added to the parade through the ADPi suite...I took my laundry home for my mommy to do! lol A perk of living 20 minutes away :)

Wow, that sounds so nice and homey and, dare I say, pleasant. The people at the front desk when I was there and when I've gone back since then are power-crazed minimum-wage employees with chips on their back and definite attitude problems (i.e. "I'll show those rich sorority b**ches who is boss!")

We have a suite since we are the newest organization on campus and the university owns the Greek houses here. There is one too few houses, so we got the suite. It's really nice, remodeled just for us. There is definitely not room for 160 girls in it, but we have 14 girls who live there. Compared to the houses (which only have 12 girls living there and no rooms large enough for chapter), it's pretty good!

During my freshman and sophomore years, we had a Panhel building in which each sorority had a chapter room. That building was then remodeled as dorm space, so Panhel was given a room in the student center. Panhel meetings took place there, and any unhoused sorority could store things there and use the space for committee meetings.

we have a house owned by the college, but it operates like a suite or floor. There is space for 10 women, 3 doubles, 4 singles. 3 bathrooms (one double has its own) but on the first floor we have a large living room/fireplace, a nice dinning/study room- the worlds best sunlight! and then a large kitchen. It is pretty roomy, we have our parties there. oh and we have the laundry in the basement and a storage room. We use our living room for chapter and stuff. :) We have the biggest sorority house on campus (both residence and space wise) Theta Pi Gamma has a cute little house, and Kappa Gamma Lambda has a floor, not even w/ a lounge. But they kinda all work the same way. We have our housing policies to fill the space, the college only mandates that they have to be initiated members. AST and Theta give keys to all initiated members. It works well, our house is sooooo cute!
