Greek Hazing ?

I am looking for information that anyone could provide in regards to punishiments of fraternities or sororities hazing cases where the university has been in the wrong. And hopefully the situtation has been resolved in a good way for the organization.
The reason I ask is that an organization on my campus is near losing its charter on campus and it is over nothing. They don't haze but the university has a new director of greek life and he has been blowing things out of proportion for many greek organizations, not just his one. We are trying to come together as a greek community and help them so any info would be appericated.

Thanks

JC

If I remember correctly... a university cannot pull a charter, only the org can. The university CAN decided to not recognize the chapter and ban it from events on campus but they can't pull charter... maybe I have miss understood how the greenbook reads and maybe it is different for frats...

I can't site any cases for you, sorry... but why was this guy choosen as the new Greek life directory if he is being sooo harsh towards the groups? Can you prove that it was not as it seems and that he was jumping the gun?

Anyway, good luck.

Many times, however, individual GLO's have policies of pulling charters when universities pull recognition.

The organization I am speaking of is near losing recognition. I meant to say that instead of charter.

Yes I can say that he is making a big deal out of nothing as he posed sancations aganist my chapter after he got an email saying we violated a rush policy. First of all we didn't violate anything but regardless no investigation was done and sancations were just handed down. And we aren't the only ones that have been punished without any type of investigation.

I know you all are probably thinking, thats not right, go to the dean of students or complain to someone. It doesn't work that way. All of that has been done, and it has got us (greek community) no where. I am looking for court cases, or University decisions in which the Greek organization wins. It doesn't matter what the situation is in each case cause i would like to read anything.

Thanks again

JC

If you are a chapter of a national or regional GLO, then contact your headquarters to let them know what is going on on your campus. If you are local, then contact your alumni board or alumni in general. Make sure that people "outside" of campus know what is going on and get their help.

This seems to be a Greek system issue. Go to the other chapters on campus and get their help. Maybe have them contact their HQs if applicable. And if you feel comfortable doing so in a public forum, then go before your governing boards (Panhellenic, IFC, Greek Council) and bring this up.

A lot depends on whether it is a public state college or private...

I would urge you to read the advice from TSteven and others, above. Below are details of a court case which may or may not be of interest, since you asked. Though again, there is some excellent advice above which may be much more suitable.

....So I started looking for alternatives. I was speaking to the executive director of DKE and he told me that a state school cannot actually deny recognition to any group that wants to come on campus.

And luckily he gave me a Precedent setting Supreme Court Case, Healy Vs. James 1972 that gave me ammunition.

Basically the supreme court case stated that publicly funded schools cannot deny recognition to new groups seeking affiliation.

The actual case involved the Students for a Democratic Society. The university didn't want the group to come to campus because it had a reputation for violent protest. The Supreme Court decided that the reputation for violence was not nough to keep a chapter from forming. Here is a link for the case:

So I printed it out and gave it to a militant friend. And he went and yelled at the administration, threatened them with a law suit and voila. The moratorium was lifted...

Crazyhead1848,

You wouldn't be talking about an MTSU frat would you?

crazyhead1848 03-11-2004 10:23 PM

No, i am not talking about them but i have heard about that and it is just as screwed up.

Tippiechick 03-11-2004 11:16 PM

Actually, that one was proven to be true... The national hq even came in and acted on it.

Hazing of any kind is screwed up. But, IMO, it benefits the Greek system more to have hazing accusations investigated and proven untrue than to give non-Greeks an impression of impropriety where hazing is concerned...

Edited because I misspelled impropriety and just now realized it... lol
