Sigma Phi Alpha Sorority?
So the other night, I was watching the movie "Drumline" with my friend, and I was complaining that sorority featured, Sigma Phi Alpha, wasn't a real sorority. But my friend swears that it is a real music sorority. I told him that Sigma Alpha Iota, which is also in the movie, is a real sorority, but Sigma Phi Alpha isn't.
So, to make a long story short.....Is there a real music sorority called Sigma Phi Alpha? Where are their chapters? Do they have a website? |

But thanks for the help though ;) |
The only Sigma Phi Alpha listed in Baird's, is for dental hygiene.
But when you really think about it, its almost impossible to differentiate between dental hygiene and music. |
I was going to post that he was wrong. There is not a member of the Professional Fraternity Association called Sigma Phi Alpha which is a professional music sorority.
Further research it seems says he is right? Murray State College: http://www.mscok.edu/demo/academies.htm "Sigma Phi Alpha is a national organization for students interested in Music and Art. The club presents recitals during the year, sponsors Fine Arts Week and arranges the annual art show. The Murray State College musical groups in the chapter present concerts and entertainment both on and off campus. " It listed there under honors fraternities. But... I couldn't find any other pages about them though national or not. |

I always thought it was a "pretend" sorority for the movie because you couldn't really have any of the real greek orgs in movies...even though in the party scene you see KKPsi and SAI members stepping and wearing letters.

But the real question is...
....is this Sigma Phi Alpha at Murray State the basis for the Sigma Phi Alpha portrayed in Drumline, or is this just purely coincidental happenstance? I believe it is more the case of the latter than the former.
If there are some websites that can help refute this notion, please direct me to them, and I will humbly retract the previous statement. Also, if the Drumline DVD has audio commentary that discusses this issue, please indicate. I saw the movie on DVD, but I didn't listen to the commentary, if there was one. |
So maybe they're music majors with really good teeth?

I doubt that they are the same, since movie GLOs are supposed to be fictitious (though I've heard of real GLOs with the same letters as movie GLOs. Good example: In the movie "Pumpkin", the sorority that Christina Ricci's character in is Alpha Omega Pi. There is apparently a local with that same name)
