When did major league teams start playing college teams in games?

Hell, I think Detroit could win it all if they could play the likes of Florida Southern all season. It's good to see the Dawgs and the Braves are renewing their old rivalry as are the Hurricanes and Marlins.

YEARS ago...... the Tigers have always started Spring Training playing college teams. You KNOW it's going to be an especially bad year when the college kids beat them (badly).

Yes, I'll admit it. I'm a Tigers fan- I grew up listening to Ernie and Paul on the radio in the days of Al Kaline, Willie Horton and Mickey Lolich. Went to the 84 World Series (game 5, center field bleachers!! the crazy section where they had to cut off beer sales in the 4th inning).

Whats sad is the Huricanes almost beat the world champs.

It's been happening for quite a long time; Boston regularly plays Boston College and Northeastern, and I know it has happened for a while other places.
