Gun rights

I swear I created a post. Maybe it didn't go through.

What is your opinion?

Yay?

Nay?

Maybe?

I believe there is a demand that won't be shut down through legislation and that they will come from other regions and countries if they need to.

I believe in everyone's right to defense. A weapon is a weapon and a gun should be available as defense.

I believe that an automatic weapon is just as dangerous as any other and not more unless it's assault rifles used in larger situations to create maximal damage which I think isn't too often.

I believe the same attention isn't given to knives and even several martial arts if the reason for pursuit is deadliness.

I believe that there should be thorough checks to prevent anyone with heavy criminal backgrounds from gaining access.

I believe in holding gun manufacturers responsible at the same time. I believe that guns should be easily identified to who owns them. I do not believe in hunting. I have experience with a wide range from small pistols to heavy assault weaponry not used in the States.

Hey, remember from Family Guy:

"Guns don't kill people...dangerous minorities do..."

"Did you know Jesus and Moses used guns to conquer the Romans?"

I guess it's who's buying them......lol

I disagree with illegalizing guns in any form.

If you do, then by definition, only criminals will possess them. Laws will not stop criminals from possessing guns. So, how does one make the world safer by ensuring that only criminals have access to guns?

I don't think anyone would agree that if we make something illegal, it will no longer occur. And if we have reason to believe that making something illegal could only make matters worse, what then is the justification for it?

Kevlar281 03-01-2004 11:30 PM

I support any law abiding citizen of the United States that chooses to possess firearms.

kappaloo 03-02-2004 12:49 AM

I am against the illegalization of guns. I am also against the boondoogle which is gun registration in Canada.

I am for the licencing of gun owners. You can't drive a car until you prove you know how, and you shouldn't be able to keep a loaded gun in your house unless you can prove you know how use it properly.

I still feel that the safest place for a gun in the house is unloaded in a locked area separate from the ammunition. However, I understand that many people keep guns for security reasons and to keep it unloaded, locked and separated from the ammo may kill the pupose of having it. However, I feel it should be illegal to have a loaded gun in an unsecured area in a house if children are present.

That all said, I doubt I'll ever own a gun. Not being a hunting person, I just don't see the point.

Lady Pi Phi 03-02-2004 10:43 AM

I hate guns. I will never own a gun. I don't like hunting (and I'm not particularly fond of people who hunt for sport....but that's for another thread at another time). I don't believe it's necessary for the average family to own a gun. That being said, I don't believe guns should be illegal. Like others have said, making it illegal won't stop the criminals from having and using one. I agree with Kappaloo. Owners should be licensed. If you can't use a gun responsibly then you don't deserve to have one. Citizens of the U.S may have the right to bare arms, but you also have a responsibilty to use those weapons wisely and properly. You can't have rights with out responsibilites.

(shocking confessions from the leftist of GC)

I grew up in a household with guns, I can fire guns, and I am not opposed to personal ownership of them. I have always felt safer having a gun in my home, because I know my father (ex-military) is trained to use it. I'm all for personal ownership both for sport or safety purposes....

however I don't think there's any need to have an assault weapon in your collection. Yes, I know that by banning things only the criminals will get them, but I think that's a flawed argument. Should we stop banning drugs because criminals get them anyway?

I think everyone is agreeing here... this is no fun...

Here is a scenario for you...

You are at home asleep with your wife... You have your two 5-year old twin daughters asleep in the next room... You hear a noise; awaken to find a huge, dirty, malicious man walking into your daughters' room with a machete. Please choose one of the following:

A.) You point your gun at him and say, "Sorry buddy, put down the machete, better luck next time... Honey call the fuzz"

Or

B.) You try to tackle him, but he is huge and swings his machete at you, and you are defenseless. He proceeds to kill everyone...

I choose option A.

True story: when I took the NRA personal protection course, we spent a full 20-minutes repeating, "Oh, God, I'm so happy to see you! I thought the Son of a B* was going to kill me!" for when the police came.

I would choose option A. But in reality, my whole family would be dead. I would not keep a gun in the house.
I can't live my life in fear that some whacko is going to break in to rape and murder my children. I will never ever keep a gun in my house.

Rudey 03-03-2004 02:11 PM

As unlikely as this situation is, I'd still provide him with a clip of body shots.

Yes. It is a waste of resources. I also think we should throw the burden of healthcare onto the individual so people make their own decisions knowing the outcomes.

There is a huge difference between drug laws and gun laws. Economists support the elimination of drug laws, but they don't for guns.

Fear the government that fears its own people. Guns should definitely remain legal.

Coramoor 03-03-2004 07:33 PM

It's more than just a matter of personal protection.

There is no way for a gov't to became a tyrant faster than if you make guns illegal. If a gov't is not afraid of it's citizens, it will do whatever it wants. The founding fathers knew this, that is why they wrote it into the Constitution. Hell, we were the rebels back then and many of the FF thought that a revolution every twenty years or so would be a good thing.

As far as I'm aware assault rifles aren't legal right now...so I don't see that as an issue. Anything that is automatic is illegal, however it is very easy to make a semi into a fully automatic weapon if you know what you are doing.

To carry hand-gun (concealed) you have to take a training course. Most people that shoot guns have learned from their parents or have gained an interest from somewhere else and taken a course in it. Very rarely will you see someone with no knowledge what so ever just decide they want a gun. I don't see a need for a license.

I am also opposed to a registration of guns. In England they started out with 'just' registering hand guns....next thing you know they decide it's illegal to own a hand gun and it just so happened they had a nifty little registration list of everyone that owned one. The gov't does not need to know who has guns, what kind, or how many.

Like it was said above. Laws are not going to stop those that want to use guns for unlawful purposes. It may stop a few accidents, but it will be far more damaging to our liberties in the future.

What about option C?

C) You point your gun and shoot the bastard. As you get closer, you see that it was not a machete but a umbrella, and it was not predator, but in fact, it was Christmas Eve, and you sir, killed Santa Claus.
