Question about Hair Straighteners

Whats the difference between the Chi and say...the "other" ones...ya know...like ones you find at Walmart or whatever. MY cousin really really wants a Chi for her b-day but those things are kinda pricey! So i had to ask. I have naturally straight hair so i never needed one of those things.

Want some? I'll make you a special batch.

Air dried I have wavy hair, can be frizzy depending on the weather. In summer no matter what I do I am a huge frizzball so I normally just do it curly, while in the winter I can make it *relatively* straight. I got a CHI right before Thanksgiving from my grandmother as an early Christmas gift. Might I also add my hair is down the middle of my back. In 10-15 minutes I can do my whole head, and it is straight. Flat, stick straight, almost asian hair straight. I have had people ask me if I got the chemical straightening it is that straight. I love the thing, if you ask me I gladly would have paid another hundred dollars for it (even though I got it as a gift). It is easy to use, quick to use, and works better then any cream, and other straightening iron I have ever had, and I've run the gammet on cheaper priced flat irons.
The reason it is so good, is because it gets to very high temperatures.
The only thing to note, I don't straighten my hair everyday, cause I don't wash it everyday. I wouldn't be able to tell you if there is more damage that occurs with more use, b/c of the temp. I also use a spray on heat protectant, I believe Paul Mitchell Heat Seal to protect my hair from the heat.
Sorry for the long post, hope this helps1

THe Chi has Ceramic plates which are supposed to be less damaging to hair and let it get hotter... (WHich in turn helps straighten better) and it does they are great... but I can safely say as long as it's ceramic it's *probably* going to work just as well... I own a CHI and I === HEART === it MUCHO

what's a chi?

i have a vidal sassoon ceramic straightener. i love it, it works so well. so much better than the last one that i had that wasn't ceramic. i looked at the chi's, but where i am at this point i couldn't justify spending that much money on a straightener when i have all these other bills too pay.

Another vote for the Vidal Sassoon ceramic straightener. Unless you have a lot of $$$ to spend on your cousin, I would recommend this one. My hair is really curly/frizzy and I have great results with this straightener that you can find at Wal Mart.

i have a hai straightener, which i've actually read better reviews about from professionals than the chi...

basically the difference between a high-end iron and something you'd buy at walmart is the quality. they generally get hotter (mine goes up to like 410 degrees i think)..plus they are usually coated in ceramic which is gentler on your hair, and helps prevent snagging. i don't know if the ceramic irons you'd buy at walmart are of the same quality because i've never used one..

they are definately worth the extra money. I bought mine off ebay for about $50 less than it retails for.

we've discussed flat irons in these threads also:

I know right??? At first I thought it was Chemical Hair Straightener. But now I'm guessing it's a Ceramic Flat Iron.

eh....i know nothing of the chi, BUT if you have semi wavy hair and want it to be strait for a lot cheaper, i have this flat iron brush type thing that you use when you dry your hair and its amazing and only cost at most $8. i got it at target, and its amazing

i dont know how well it would work if you had really curly hair, my hair is just sorta curly when i air dry it

No, helen of troy & hai are not the same thing. helen of troy is on the same level of quality as say a hot tools or other brand you could buy at walmart or a sally's beauty supply.

brands like hai, chi and solano are higher salon quality irons.
