Phi Delta Theta at Vanderbilt Suspended for Hazing

The Tennessean reports that the Phi Delta Theta chapter at Vanderbilt has been suspended for three years for hazing.

No details on the exact nature of the incidents.

WOW, was really spelled out! DA!:(

But the problem is, they are gone! Period!

My Question now is, When will idiots ever learn?

What good did it do them? Pretty Self Evident dont you think!

vandy_violet 02-28-2004 09:39 PM

Strange that this should appear in the Tennessean but not the student newspaper...everyone knows that Phi Delt is in trouble, but in general no one seems to know anything very specific. I hope that the hazing wasn't "physical" as they say in the article, but who knows? There are always rumors as to which houses do what to their pledges. The current administration is not Greek-friendly, and many of us speculate it's because at least some of the administration believes that driving Greeks off-campus will make us a more competitive university. I've been told similar things are happening at Duke...I guess we're both trying to be the "Harvard of the South", but the irony of that to me is that the Ivies have their own secret societies. I also don't think you can drive the Greek presence off of a Southern campus, especially considering influential Greek alumni.

Interesting...Phi Delts were in trouble at Illinois a few years ago, for similar behavior. Perhaps HQ needs to look at their pledge program on a national level?

We had a chapter go down there due to what I think were similar circumstances.

Sounds like the interfraternal community might have a culture issue.

vandy_violet 02-29-2004 03:31 AM

I have heard speculation about what Phi Delt may or may not have done to their pledges. Hazing has been a problem in other chapters here as well, but girls who have friends or boyfriends at other schools have heard of similar incidents. The culture issue is that the university is creating a Greek-hostile culture. Greek houses get in trouble often for things that 50% of campus that is GDI gets away with doing in their on-campus suites and apartments. Believe me...all the sororities are about to have a fit b/c they've started going after sororities now. As in, sorority members hanging out together in groups of 4 or 5 at a frat/ or on-campus party with alcohol, but not affiliated with their house, can get them in trouble. If you're Greek, you can get in trouble for having a party in your own dorm but you probably won't if you're GDI. The only GDI party I know of that was really busted was a coordinated effort between a row of apartments to have a "crawl" type of party. When they report a Greek-related incident in the paper, they'll put the girl's picture and list the types of alcohol found in her car (no, this was not my house, but that's not the issue). Then we get ignorant people like this taking advantage of a bid day event to talk about how useless he thinks all Greeks are (and it is not typical for the cops or an AD to bust up a dorm party, btw):
http://www.vanderbilthustler.com/vne...5?in_archive=1 and this previously in the year: http://www.vanderbilthustler.com/vne...1?in_archive=1
Sorry to rant, but I'd like to know if anyone else's Greek community is having to deal with ignorant people like this lately...

The Vanderbilt Hustler has an article on the Phi Delta Theta closing today, March 2:

http://www.vanderbilthustler.com/vne.../4043ff5ebb47f

The story has a couple of quotes, from Vanderbilt's general counsel and from the executive VP of Phi Delta Theta, but not a whole lot more information than was in the Tennessean's article.
Apparently some decisions have to be made about the house and its use.

No details about the incidents.

" Is the old saying , Stupid Is As Stupid Does Sound Appropos Here"?

So what These Fine Young Brothers Did it Ruined not only The Repratation of the Brothers There but sullied the Repretration Of a Fine Fraternity!

Now, Where does that Land The National for Lowe Those Many Years, and if They Can Ever Come Back on?

Does Dumb Asses Sound Good!:(

We don't need to look at our pledge program, thanks. We have 180+ chapters...there are (of course) going to be some ones that make the wrong decisions. The Vanderbilt chapter has been around since 1877, its not going anywhere. The suspension was only for 3 years, not indefinitely. Furthermore, the crackdown on hazing has become rather.....reptitious and ultimately PC. I mean, its not like they killed someone or held people down and branded them.

So everythings okay as long as they don't kill them or brand them? Hmmm..... cracking down on hazing isn't PC, it's common sense; as long as chapters think that debasing, demeaning, or degrading new members is the way to go they get what they deserve....

I don't mean this to attack anyone, but seriously, even if you admin is horribly anti- greek you should hold your self to a higher standard. If you can get in trouble for it, don't do it. Be careful and make them respect you for being upstanding citizens. Just because we are greek we call attention to ourselves. Maybe we do have to do things 10x better to get the same respect, but then we need to rise to that, not bitch about it. We feel like we have an anti-greek admin, but we also have sat down with them and worked to understand where they are coming from. And that will make some progress, but also opened our eyes to see that some of the policies are risk management, some are based on other decision that have nothing to do with us. I'd just play it safe and also notice that the charges were brought by IFC not the admin

and whomever it was that said they'll always be there, that is horrible to support hazing in such a manner.

Tom Earp 03-25-2004 07:17 PM

Quite right!

now because of this, whether it be PhiDelts or anyone else, just how does it look to the Greek Community and The City of and School Stalwarts who want to dropped dead Fred On Greeks who act like Freaks!??

And You have the gaul to stand on this site and say it is OKAY!

WOW, You have 180 + Chapters, well LXA has more and We do not condone hazing (1928) and when they are caught at the local level if they are doing it, they do not have their hands spanked, THEY ARE SUSPENDED! Rightly so!

Get it?

You condone, then, you make us all look bad!

No Hazing Policies

We have a no hazing policy, which i believe allows us to get right down to the whole point of being in a fraternity. Bettering yourself and getting some new friends as you do it. I didn't mention the beer, but that comes as standard.

Yeah yeah yeah...Ive heard it before...anyone know a guy named Hoosier? Yeah, we've had a few rounds.

To each their own.

Paul,

With all due respect. Maybe your chapter should revisit what the Greek System as a whole is about, and at the same time do a little Risk Management homework.

Phi Delt,

When you are losing chapters (we've lost some, too this year), you always should take a hard look at your pledging policies.
