Toast Song survey - Region III
Brothers, Pledges, Alumni, and Petitioners of Region III:
I encourage every member of Alpha Phi Omega in Region III to please visit http://www.apor3.org/toastsong.php and participate in the Toast Song survey. We'd like to have as many student responses as possible - INCLUDING pledges and petitioners, as well as Brothers. So, please pass this link along in your chapters. Thank you! |
Hey do you have to be in Region III to vote? I'm in Region IV!!!

TS debate
Per the National Convention of 2002, each Region is to convene a committee and investigate the Toast Song 'debate.' I know there was a workshop on this at the Region IV Conference. However, Region III is gathering the opinions of all members in this Region for our report, which is due in July. You can participate in the survey - but it won't be counted in the tally for the purposes of the Region III report.
I posted the survey link here, b/c I know that there are a LOT of III-Brothers lurking here! :-) |

Like me! I submitted my 2 cents already. Thanks, Jamie! |

I knew that this would re-surface again. Why not change the colors while we're at it??lol. I disagree with the "possibility" of altering the lyrics, but that just my opinion.

I think the next thing will be whether or not to use the term sister and then get a program for sisterhood.
I believe those that choose to change the fraternity after they became a member may be regreting the choice they made, and the changes that they persue are with the hope that it might make them feel much better about that decision. If you look at the changes made in the past you can see where, some ideas where cosmetic changes designed to allow certain members to feel more like they were meant to be apart of the organization, they made the decision to be apart of. like the statement of Frank Reed Horton. Changing "to give men.." to say that he said "to give people" How can you change what the founder of your organization once said. In Alpha Phi Omega, anything is fair ground. All the years of the multi-tude of members were assembled in the hall of the convention. And when the toast song was sung, everybody young and old knew the words. Shatter that, and you'll everybody sounding like jibber-jabber. Some singing it different than the individuals who have it memorized. |

Why would think they would not sing it. If they only knew one for 5 to twenty years why would they want to sing anything else but what they have been taught and have been singing for years and years. How bout the ones that don't even know a change was made. You have everybody singing a toast song, not the toast song. Right now, everybody can sing in unison. Some changes break down bonds. And when you have equal passion on both sides, you drive a stake down the middle of those passionate sides. |
Possible changes
With Jaybee's point, I think that *if* a change is made that the addition of a third verse would be least disruptive. Sure, some chapters like my undergrad chapter would have to figure out new physical motions. (We go from arms over neighbors shoulders in verse 1 to arms crossed in second verse), but I think that would be less disruptive than the change to "true to".
Having said that, most of the people in most toast song circles have learned the toast song less than 5 years prior... Randy |
A third verse! I can see the momentary fading silence now as the people who didn't know the change on paper, mumbles as if they knew what the words were, faking it like we would a gospel hymn we never heard before. I'm sure that some people will evently learn the "new" verse over time. But since the split exist from those that are favored and those that have been opposed, you still might have other dropping off after the second verse.

Just as we were split in 1964 over the addition of the second verse.

Hmmm.... I dont agree with a change either.
