In what ways do you THINK people treat you differently?
Lets get a little creative and exclude race and weight...since both have been discussed here 1001 times. :)
Do you think people treat you differently because you are tall? Quiet? Short? Attractive? Have money? These are somewhat obvious questions, but the aim of this thread is to talk about our personal observations and experiences. |
I think people treat me differently sometimes because I work in retail. I've had some of the most obnoxious customers think all I am is a retail worker...and therefore, have no education and paid minimum wage.
On the contrary, I have a degree and get paid so much that I'm in no hurry to leave because I have been able to support myself to my liking for over a year and a half now. People in retail aren't just idiots you know! ETA: Nothing pisses me off more when people think that mom's who stay at home are worthless, have no career ambition and can't think for themselves. My mom stayed at home for years and I couldn't be more thankful because she was always there for us kids...putting her career on hold for us. |
I really get tired of all the little children, throwing rose petals on the ground, before me as I walk. I'm not your king. I just want to be left alone, and live my life among the people.
|
I think people treat me like I'm unintelligent sometimes, because I am very supportive of traditional values, gender roles, etc.
Once they find out that I work as a secretary on purpose, because I want to be able to devote my life to my husband and child(ren) instead of a job, tend to look at me like I've grown a 2nd head! Edit: I swear Hootie's post hadn't loaded when I responded to this thread ;) Edit again because I thought Hootie was saying that SAHM's ARE worthless, and it was funny that I'd said the opposite. But she didn't. So now I just sound stupid. Maybe there's a reason people think I am... carry on! :) |
I get treated absolutely charmingly by many of my coworkers because my parents pay my rent and some of my tuition. I've had some of them tell me I don't need to be working because my parents will take care of me.
Yeah, the GPParents have some money, but they sure as heck aren't sharing much with me. ;) I also get stellar treatment from lots of women who find out that I dislike children and do not intend to spend the best years of my life bursting forth wtih my husband's seedlings. |
I get treated differently because I scuba dive and don't expect to be treated any differently than the men I dive with.

1) Childless middle aged couples think I'm a "typical trendy 20-something" and always point out styles from more "trendy" stores.
2) Because I'm really young looking (I can pass for a high school junior if I'm dressed down), people often don't take me all that seriously. |
On occasion I will be treated like I am brainless because I stay at home with my kids but my friends are supportive and my husband and daughters prefer it so that's all that matters.
I think certain things have come easier to me than they would have otherwise because I 've always been fairly cute looking. I guess that's all I can think of for now! |
Well, most people think i am ditzy because i am short, cute, and have big boobs. So big boobs means no brain I guess. Guys think I am easy and girls think I am a slut. I am a very intelligent person. I resent the fact that if you are attractive with a nice body people think you are only good for "standing around and looking pretty". I am very rarely taken seriously, and unless I am with people who know me, I am treated as a toy. Of course, that lasts for about 20 seconds until I open my mouth. Not so pretty then.......:D I have a wicked tongue for those unfortunante people who care to judge before they know me.

Although I'm sarcastic probably wayy too much, I really try to be a kind person. If you really look at what I say, I try not to say things that are intentionally hurtful. People automatically assume I'm a bitch/heartless which really isn't true. Because of my sense of humor, they get defensive and think I'm saying something about them before they even hear what I have to say.
And for other reasons I can't figure out, all my good friends say that they hated me when they first met me, b/c I was "intimidating/snobby/stuck up." Also hurts, b/c I'm usually EXTREMELY intimidated by people, especially girls. |
I am treated differently because I am a female chemist. Most of the people I work with are "old school" and think that a woman's place is at home with the children. (And there is nothing wrong with being a stay-at-home mother. That's just not me though.) These men are amazed to see an attractive, 23 year old female walking around the lab performing the same tasks as they do. And they're always amazed to find out that I actually know what I am doing!:D

Don't worry, I doubt you were in San Diego when I was doing it to people. I was 10 anyway.........but they couldn't get it off their hands for DAYS. |

Maybe they think that about me b/c I got a demerit in junior high for initiating a third grader into our pen15 club.
She went and cried. Her mom was a lunch monitor. Yep, that's gotta be what's haunted me all these years.... |
