Tonsils - Do you have them?

I have gotten sick more times this year than I have in my entire life, and they've all been respiratory things - - always with a lot of inflammation and pain in the throat. Can anyone relate?? Does this have anything to do with the fact that I still have my tonsils? The reason I ask is a girl I work with had the same problem and her dr ended up taking her tonsis out (she hasn't been sick since).

I used to get strep throad and tonsilitus all the time. I had tonsils and adinoids removed at age 6 1/2 and haven't had either since.

I don't know whether you can relate upper respiratory problems to them, though.

ok, i have had throat problems all my life.....when i was little, i had tonsilitis ALL the time....but the drs told me i had to have 6 sore throats in 6 months....i had 5, so they wouldn't take my tonsils out. mom was pissed.

fast forward to being at the dr when i was in college....i had tonsilitis....my dr looked in my throat and was like, "WHOA....you know you can take those out, right?" apparently, nowadays you can get your tonsils taken out simply b/c you SNORE. so, that dec. i my tonsils and adnoids taken out. my dr and the anesthesiologist both told my parents i had the biggest tonsils they had ever seen, and i was "healthy" at the time. (b/4 when i got sick, it would completly close my throat up and i'd be on liquids.) :p

3 yrs later, and even my allergy trouble in april and may is less severe. if you have ANY problems with your throat and stuff on a repeated basis, GET THEM OUT!!!! was the best thing i did...however, the older you are, the worse it gets. i lost 12 lbs in one week. and that whole "eat ice cream" theory did NOT apply to me. i could only drink room temperature water and chicken broth. anything else killed me. that lasts for a lil over a week.

They left a little bit of my mom's left tonsil and it gew BACK!

I always had really back throat problems but every time they were going to take them out I would get bronchitis and/or pneumonia. My tonsils would be so swollen that I could barely eat. So for years they thought I had horrible tonsilitis. When I was 17 I got a new health plan and they realized I did not have tonsilitis but cronic and continuing bronchitis that made it seem like I had tonsilitis. I now have antibotics and take the proper vitamins to keep me under control and I now know when my tonsils start to act up I need to see a Dr. before it gets worse.

I still have my tonsils but I probably should have had them removed years ago!

I still have mine, and suprisingly, they're the one thing in this broke-down body that have always been healthy!

I have them....AND DON'T WANT THEM!!!

when i get strep (which is alot) they get so inflammed my throat closes and anything besides really really hot stuff/really really cold stuff doesn't go down.
each time, my doc calls around for open ORs, can't find any, and I end up with a shot of penecililan and steroids, and my throat goes down the next day.
my doc won't take them out b/c recently 2 of my cousins had them out and had a really rough time with it...they both ended up hospitialized for 2 weeks. so the doc doesn't want to take the same chance with me.

i suspect one of these time i'll be at school or somewhere away from doc, end up in the ER, and then get sent to the OR for emercengy surgery, but until then....

steroids rock

I'm 29 and still have mine. Back in November, I had a BAD case of toncilitis - the worse I've ever had. They ALWAYS swell up over something - allergies, a cold, whatever.

This is me. I was sick last week and thought it was an ear infection. So last weekend I went to the ER because my ears were hurting. Anyway I asked the nurse practitioner if I still had my tonsils. She said yes and I asked should I consider having them taken out. And she's all why? Apperently the tonsils serve some kind of function and are vital in some way. I think she said it helps the spleen in some way. Of course she also told me I had a virus when it truns out I had a upper respiratory infection:rolleyes:

The nurse is right. The tonsils were once thought to have no important function with the body, but new research has shown that it does so some doctors are not so quick to take thme out anymore. When I go back to work (I work at a hospital) , I'll post what that function is, because I don't know off the top of my head.

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 19. Actually, my youngest sister and I had them out the very same day...within just a few hours of each other! It was nice to have someone there who was dealing with the same thing as me.

Before I got them out, I would get extremely sick. It wasn't just my throat that hurt, but my entire body. When I would have a flare-up, it was like I had come down with the flu. It even got to a point where a regular gum-ball sized thing developed in my throat...so big you could see it just looking at me. And, it was so bad that it impaired my voice and my ability to swallow. Before the tonsils came out, I would live on jello!

It took me longer than my sister to heal due to my age, but in the end, I am so glad that they are gone! I don't think I have had a sore throat since and before, I had them all the time.

AT__ years of age I am missing some teeth! Got everything else!:D

Figure if The Man did not want us to have it, then why put it there?;)

My body aint a temple or a fine tuned machine, but as the saying goes, Shit, If I had know I would live this damn long why didnt I take better care of it! I do give it a lot of lubricant and daily!:)

Do you live in a dorm or in your sorority house? Because all through college I had throat and lung problems every winter, all winter long...first it'd be a cold, then it'd be bronchitis, then it'd be strep throat, then it'd be walking pneumonia, plus various other upper respiratory infections sprinkled in. But voila, since I've graduated and am living at home, I've only had one minor cold-type thing this whole winter. It's great. :)
