Clark Announces Withdrawal From Race

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Wesley Clark (search) dropped out of the race for the White House on Wednesday, a retired four-star general unable to command significant support as a first-time presidential candidate.



"This is the end of the campaign for the presidency," Clark told supporters in his home state of Arkansas.

He coupled his withdrawal with words of praise for his remaining rivals — the front-runner, Sen. John Kerry (search), as well as Sen. John Edwards (search) and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.

"They're good men, they're good Democrats and they're good patriots," said Clark, who decided to abandon his quest after finishing third behind Kerry and Edwards in Democratic primaries Tuesday in Virginia and Tennessee. "Our country is well-served" by them, he added.

Clark ran a good race. looks like Kerry is one step closer to his goal.

Clark or Edwards would be good choices for the vp slot. Keep the southerners happy. I think Edwards would be Kerry's first choice since he did better than Clark in the race. But Edwards might not be happy with that and say no. A Clark vp would probably please the Clinton folk. Bill will endorse the final canidate no matter who it is but if Clark was vp I am sure he would campaign for them more so.

Clark would help form what has been called a "ballanced ticket," with the two candidates being from different regions of the country.

Kerry from the East and Clark from the sort of South-Midwest-West kinda place.

I'm changing Geography.

I like how Dean is still in this and wasting everyone's money for his own popularity in the years to come.

It's a long way to the convention, and stranger things have happened, but it sure looks like a Bush/Kerry race shaping up.

I still think we should cancel the whole process and let Skull and Bones decide this behind closed doors.

I truly believe Dean is a complete idiot! i would really like Kerry to appoint Clark as VP. I am registered republican but i truly think Kerry would be better off to have a southerner involved in his campaign andi think clark would be the best for that office.

True - it baffles me why Dean is still in this race.

I'd love to see him just completely kill any political opportunities he has in the future; he's certainly well on his way.

Don't worry... we're already watching the political self-destruction of Howard Dean... if he keeps going after he tanks in Wisconsin, methinks it's about time to pull the loud handle and punch out, lest he wish to punch a smoking hole in the proverbial ground!

Howard is going to tank here bigtime. He'll probably win Madison, but he's too random to appeal to the rest of the people.

I think Kerry's gonna have a clear lead here, we don't like accents from certain parts of the country. ;)
