Hey, are there any dentists or oral surgeons here on GC? (I have insurance.)

My lower jaw is down there on the carpet after reading a quote in Lehigh's student paper. The director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, commenting on several things, including a possible decline in fraternity rush numbers / interest, said:

"We allow underage drinking . . ." (He was contrasting Lehigh with some other "competing" schools.) Startling thing to say for publication!

Other than that, there are a number of interesting comments, from fraternity members as well as the director, about the interests and concerns of potential new members, as well as changes that fraternities may need to make to be more attractive.

That is a strange article. It's almost like the administration and greeks traded places.

I have the feeling that his comment was twisted a bit, to refer to campus policy rather than Greek policy. Bucknell's admin has been getting to the point where if you look at a beer you get expelled.

Underage drinking is legal in many if not all of the states. For example, a Mother may serve wine to her underage daughter in their residency. That is legal. Heck, the Mother doesn't have to serve the wine. On a level, drinking in one's home, regardless of age, is not illegal. However, I'm not sure where the line is regarding an "adult" serving it to "minors". Someone with legal experience might be able to address this better.

The GLO issue that comes out of this is whether or not a GLO house, or dorm room for that matter, is considered a residence. I know that on some campuses, buying and or bringing in alcohol to your dorm room - when you are not of legal age to do so - is a no no. However, if you have it in your room, it is ok to drink. And some campuses allow drinking to go on "in the GLO house" as long as it is only the members and in the house. Again, I am not sure how that works from a legal aspect. Mainly why a GLO member who is underage may drink in the GLO House with their buddies, but not at a party if they are underage.

By the way, I am not condoning this one way or the other.

It is illegal by the Laws of this Country that if one is under 21, it is illegal, not if you are in your room at a Fraternity/Soroity Chapter House.

It sounds like the editorial staff is either not thinking straight or smoking some haha stuff!

you cant gamble until 21 and rent a car until 25. anyways. I think underage drinking is bad......it is so shocking on how many greek allow it........ and right there, they dont even be discreet.....

I read the article and perhaps what Carey was meaing to say was that the campus, fraternities and recruitment allow liquor, the campus isn't dry, and therefor underage drinking occurs. ANd from what I have saw there during the '02/'03 school year there was little to no enforcement of the laws of the Commonwealth of PA

i can attest to ztamich's statements, but going back a few years to the 96/96, 96/97, 97/98 school years! parties at lehigh were much different than at muhlenberg. hard alcohol, kegs, food, no guest lists, etc. were the norm. honestly, they were a lot of fun, but they definately didn't have the rules, etc., that muhlenberg did.
