MTV furthers the controversy..
since the super bowl fiasco, mtv has decided to move some videos they consider too racy into the late night slots
videos too racy... 'toxic' britney spears 'megalomaniac' incubus 'this love' maroon 5 also videos by blink 182 and others mtv my thinking is that they are only moving 6 videos. what about the rap videos?! darn my spelling error |
I saw the most racey rap video the other night on BET. I cannot remember who's video it was, but the girls in it were booty dancing and wearing thongs...the girls in the bathtub were naked and making out (the breasts were censored). "Must be your a$$ cuz it ain't your face" seemed to be the chorus. Overall though, I was appauled (call me a conservative, but I just didn't think it was necessary.
Now - I don't know if that video is on MTV, but if it were, it definitely belongs on the after 10pm slot! ETA: CMT did the same thing with the Rascal Flatts video "I Melt" in which the guitarist got out of bed naked, and all you saw was his naked bum (BTW - HOTTIE). Before 10pm the video was censored and after 10pm it wasn't. But there was quite an uproar about this video. |

Look the same crap happened years ago with the Alice in Chains video "Rooster", with claims that it would cause un-due trama or suffering amongst veterans.... MTV moved to a later "mature" slot with the intention that it would cause no more issues...
Don't know how efffective it was but, the video was prime rotation here in Canada.... but I can admit that I could see how it could be an issue with Vietnam Vets.... As for the crap regarding Jackson/Timerlake.... who cares, the more people make an issue of it, the more weight it has. |
Maybe I see things differently because I'm a Canadian, but i really dont think the whole Jackson/Timberlake thing was that big a deal. I saw it live, & it's not like you saw her actual breast. it was covered by what ever that thingy was. But am I the only one who remembers lil kim showing up at the mtv awards in half a dress & a beaded flower over one boob? no one made such a big deal about that...i realize Janet is waaay bigger, & 14 million ppl or something watched the superbowl, but it's the same thing! Anyways, I just dont think it's such a big deal.

The main difference is that, if, as a parent, you don't want your children to see these things quite yet, you don't let them watch the MTV award shows because you know something outrageous is going to happen. Conversely, you don't think the Super Bowl is something you're going to have to censor from them. My daughter has a huge crush on Justin Timberlake and I don't want her thinking that it's ok for him to rip off a woman's clothes on TV. Also, I don't want my son thinking he can just reach over and rip off a girl's shirt.

Watching 'Nipplegate' would not teach any child with good parents that doing that was okay becausee they would already know better. Only a parent's example would convey that kind of message. My cousin is 4, saw the superbowl show and was convinced that JT was going to get in BIG trouble, because he knows that boys shouldn't do that to girls. His parents taught him that. Any parent worth the name doesn't let the tv teach their kids, they do it themselves. |
True, but you don't deliberately expose your kids to things that you believe are wrong. There are studies that show that the more we are exposed to something taboo or horrific, the more desensitized we become to it.
I think the issue that bothers me most is that celebs are trying harder and harder to shock people and it *is* requiring more and more to shock. With Elvis, it was shaking his hips. Now they have to get naked. Dee |
while i know it is nothing new to see something like this on mtv you must remember that thats cable. You pay to have that and know that there could be things like that on the programs. While with network tv you don't expect something like that ecspecially during a football game.
I think that some people have forgotten that not everyone has cable and not everyone sees mtv and stuff all day.. so seeing something like this on network is different. |

Janet's nipple piercing did have nipple/aerola showing through. Of course, we all had to see the shot frozen and magnified 500 times to know that, but it was there. So that makes it "unacceptable". Dumb but true... |

Considering they hardly ever play videos anymore anyway, I don't know why they are making a big deal of it. |
