White House Lists Programs It Wants to Cut

The White House released yesterday a list of the 65 programs it wants to terminate in 2005, along with the programs it hopes to cut back significantly. Here is part of that list:

· Advanced Technology Program, which supports high-risk technology development with the private sector. 2004: $171 million; 2005: 0.

· School Alcohol Abuse Reduction. 2004: $30 million; 2005: 0.

· Arts in Education grants. 2004: $35 million; 2005: 0.

· Comprehensive School Reform grants for low-income schools. 2004: $234 million; 2005: 0.

· Eisenhower Math and Science Education Programs. 2004: $20 million; 2005: 0.

· Even Start family literacy. 2004:$247 million; 2005: 0.

· Education Department Parental Information and Resource Centers. 2004: $42 million; 2005: 0.

· Community Development Block Grants. 2004: $334 million; 2005: 0.

· HOPE VI public housing revitalization. 2004: $149 million; 2005: 0.

· Tax-favored Empowerment Zones. 2004: $15 million; 2005: 0.

· Brownfields Redevelopment. 2004: $25 million; 2005: 0.

· Rural Housing and Economic Development. 2004: $25 million; 2005: 0.

· Local Law Enforcement Grants. 2004: $1.58 billion; 2005: 0.

· Juvenile crime prevention block grants. 2004: $59 million; 2005: 0.

· Migrant and Seasonal Farmworker Training. 2004: $77 million; 2005: 0.

· Smaller Learning Communities to divide large high schools into smaller ones. 2004: $174 million; 2005: 0.

· Health Professional Training Grants. 2004: $409 million; 2005: $126 million.

· Rural Health Aid. 2004: $147 million; 2005: $56 million.

· Homeland Security first responders. 2004: $4.37 billion; 2005: $3.56 billion.

· Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Program. 2004: $78 million; 2005: $44 million.

· Election Reform. 2004: $1.49 billion; 2005: $65 million.

Wonder if this has anything to do with the record kabazillion dollar deficit? :confused:

I'm sure that there are other "little" programs that could be cut that we know nothing about. And I notice that the Congressional program isn't listed - you know, the one where they vote to give themselves an increase every year while honest, hard-working people are just barely making ends meet working 40+ hours every week and not having enough time to spend with their families.

I'm sorry Soror. . . I ranted, babbled and digressed. :(

Note a theme: education, lower income people affected. :rolleyes:

Congress has the best pay raises and the best retirement plan on EARTH.. they are busters too. booo

i can't say i'm surprised by this turn of events...

No Child had no teeth to begin with.. you want to improve test scores, but not give the $$ to help fund programs to help improve the scores (or pay teachers what they are worth?) :rolleyes:

Mm-hmm. Think about it this way: all those poor black, brown (and white) kids who benefit from social services will see these services cut back even more. Welfare has been severely cut back and there's little money for higher education -- that is if you're lucky enough that your home school had the resources to help you become a competitive student. Heaven help you if you were one of those child(ren) who were "left behind"...

Those who don't want to participate in "underground" economies have basically one option: the military. Poor folks sign up, and poor folks continue to die. :mad:

Exactly. This is why I thank God that I was not one of he ones "left behind", and able to be a competitive student despite me academic and personl obstacles and gain admission into a good university...But the situation saddens me b/c I just think about the other students who are going to be "left-behind" in the future. Cutting back Arts in the Schools, Alcohol prevention Programs, Juvinile Crime Prevention, and (the one that pisses me off the most, b/c it directly relates to all the other "education" Programs) nopt merging larger schools into smaller ones (which would equal smaller class sizes, and at very least a better chance at learning) is going to detrimentally hurt "our" community.

Like my younger sister is still in school. The US (combined with my own state's) budget deficit will make it even harder for her to pay for her schooling all by herself (just like I had to do)...Well, like Nikki said..., that's why we need to vote...

I, too, would like to see anyone but Bush in the White House BUT, IMHO, there is no SINGLE candidate that has enough backing to beat Dubya. Therefore, he may yet win another election that he doesn't deserve to win!

If we can encourage all our peers to get out and vote we have a chance! I just hope that the "conspiracy to get FL" that went down in the 2002 election wakes people up and make them realize how important it is for all us to ge to the polls. We have to GET BUSH OUTTA THERE!
