Affiliates and chapter total
 

NPC question. How do affiliates affect a chapter's total?

For example. ABC has formal rush in the fall. The house makes quota and is over total. Angie Affiliate - an ABC from another school - transfers in January and wants to affiliate with this chapter. The women of ABC think she is wonderful and would love for her to affiliate. Since ABC is not only at, but over total, will Angie be able to affiliate? Or will she have to wait until the chapter goes under total?

I don't have a GREEN BOOK infront of me... but I would say that since she wasn't an initating member at that chapter that she can afflitate... or she could do the next best thing and just become an alumnae but be very active with that org. Only problem with that is she may not have a voice with chapter happenings... someone with a GREEN BOOK please!

She is supposed to wait until the chapter is below total.

What about this? Angie attends Big State U. and is in a one of a kind, only on this campus, program. She pledges and is initiated with AB chapter of XYZ her freshman year. XYZ is not at total. Over the summer, her mom becomes ill, so Angie transfers to Small Hometown U. her sophomore year to take care of her mother. SHU has a chapter (DE) of XYZ and she affiliates with them. The DE chapter is not at total so no issue. Now, things are fine with mom, so Angie is able to go back to Big State U. and is accepted back in her program. Let's say that XYZ is now at total since they COBed during the year. Since she was originally imitated with the AB chapter, would she still need to affiliate? If not, would XYZ have to take one less new member? Are there any "special circumstance" where someone might be able to affiliate?

According the the Green Book, chapters may affiliate a transfer member even though the addition of that member will put it over Total. She does not have to wait until the chapter is below total.

For the example that TSteven poses, since she did affiliate with the SHU chapter of XYZ, when she transfers back to BSU, she would have to affiliate (or do some form of paperwork with XYZ's HQ... oh I love initials!!) with them even though they are her chapter of initiation.
