Student Government
 

I was just wondering if any of you are/were involved with Student Senate/Student Government at your schools? At my university, people always complain that there are "too many Greeks" on senate...is it the same way at a lot of other schools?

At my campus, the assembly consisted of 30, but only 1/5 of that was made up of Greeks...myself included, during the two years I served on ASUH.

I didn't serve on ASUH during my final year of college, but AGD was positively represented, with 6 members serving as senators of their respective colleges.

I served on our student senate my freshman year and then was the legislative public relations assistant another year.

I was never involved on my high school's "student council" but when I joined Chi Omega and learned that so many of the girls were on senate, I decided to run. The funny thing is almost 90% of senate was greek, and those who weren't greek were best friends with the greeks. All of the president regents at our school have been greek (while I was there anyways).

Chopper on here is/was on our senate, though after me :)

I served at juniro college level as ASB/student council as secretary and then as social science senate rep


At university level i served as IHR( inter hall rep.) from my dorm

At jr college level i ran a semi successful campagin student council president. i lost my a small margain of the vote ( 400 votes)


HS i was on ASB every yr as a class officer

Last year was the first time that I can remember a non-greek getting elected to Pres. Pro Tempore of the Senate. I'm pretty sure it's the first time ever. Other than that, all leadership positions have always been held by GLO members. Can't really blame us, the student body keeps electing us:D We keep appointing eachother to offices.

I served as chair of the Senate Judiciary for a year. Was on Rules as well.

Yeah at Nebraska (in Lincoln, not Omaha where Hootie is at) the majority of senators are greek, and the Presidential candidates have all been Greek for a really long time. While there are some people who complain about the number of Greek candidates, i think the vast majority of GDI's just view ASUN as a waste.

The biggest reason it's so predominantly greek is because Greeks are the only ones who actually vote. The only other section of students that regularly vote is the kids in the Honors Program Dorm, but that's not enough to get someone who doesn't have the Greeks support elected.

The non-Greeks on the Senate got there b/c they joined the strongest Greek led party, and rode in on that name b/c when you have to choose 6 senators on the ballot and know only 3, it's difficult to just randomly pick the other three, so everyone votes down party lines.

At a SoCal university where I was a grad student, I found out the student government actively excluded greeks--ALL greeks!!!

So, oneday when I was at a fundraiser for a city organization, I met a city councilman that I new was greek and had graduated from this university...

I conveniently told him of the active discrimination against all greeks at this university's council...

The next I hear, within 2 months, the IFC and NPC had a seat on the student senate...

Oh well...
