Recruiting (for the first time)

I'd love some ideas on how your sororities recruit new members.

How do you get people interested?

SOCIALIZE SOCIALIZE SOCIALIZE!!!!!

You can't do enough of that!! We gained 6 pledges this semester by doing that. (At Rio, if you have 3 pledges it's a huge class :p) Where your letters/org's all the friggin' time! If you see a PNM walking to class, pull over and ask her if she wants a ride (you'll seem even nicer if it's raining/snowing/just plain crappy outside!) Works all the time! Oh, and SMILE :D SMILE :D SMILE :D

Heh..and having some hott "lil bro's" never hurt either.... ;) *recruited her own boyfriend for this purpose*

The VP and I are planning a couple of social events during recruitment. We were thinking of having three days of recruitment- Monday and Wednesday of the same week and then that following Monday... or a possible Friday (depending if I work, etc.).

One of our social recruitments is a Meet & Greet. It's our time to get to know PNM's and for PNM's to get to know the Actives. There are just TWO Actives. Were in desperate need of Sisters and we'll take anyone- even if it's like 80 girls!

As far as social events go during recruitment, Meet & Greet will proabably happen twice during recruitment. Maybe once for all PNM's but two different events during that week.

Most of the students are on campus during the day time. I live off campus, but the VP lives on campus.

Some ideas I have (but they are so plain)
- Hawaiian Luau
- Girl's Nite
- Casino Night

Someone had suggested to us that we team up with Campus Activities Team and do an event with them to get our NAME out. Since were a BRAND NEW group on campus, people go "huh"?.

RECRUITMENT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. IT'S POSSIBLE WHEN PEOPLE WORK TOGETHER. This was a main problem last sememster because the VP and I ended up doing everyone's work- even when it came down to possible recruitment.

The last thing you want is to sound desperate for girls. Then you will just take anyone and those girls may not be the girls that have the dedication to carry on the house. Remember quality over quantity. Even if it's just 3 girls, make sure they are 3 girls that are willing to stand up for the house at it's weakest moment.
And make that your recruitment motto. Find girls that want to be the part of a building process. Ones that want to start a new sorority. Being on an anti greek campus makes it even harder. Just keep your head high.

Luau nights can be really fun. The cheesier the better. We went roller skating one year. My great grand sis is part of recruitment this semster. SHe came up with a "banana night." Bring your own banana. I am guessing they are making banana splits cuz we usually have an ice cream social. But I have no idea.

The only thing that I am concerned with is not recruting enough Sisters to make this group active. Last sememester when we tried recruiting, we had eight Sisters. Most of those Sisters dropped out. Either they couldn't make a time committment, or they cut themselves out because of their attendance (in our group your allowed to miss three events- events being meetings, recruitment gatherings, our own events... and there are seperate point values for each category)

Movie nights would be the easiest. Even if it was a themed movie night.... like "3 Movies that define our Sisterhood as a whole" or something to that effect. Everyone loves food... and when people see food, they go.

Getting the word out there is the hardest. I can make little flyers and stick them onto people's cars (if that is allowed) or do something creative. The VP and I thought of making shirts for the Sisters. We just need creative PR ways of marketing. We got in touch with one of the professors who teaches marketing classes and he knows of 10 PNM's. People are really pulling out for us... and I don't want to let them down-

As far as choosing girls etc.. were not allowed to be picky with who we choose and who we don't. We have to give bids to everyone because it's a club it has to be open to everyone (both male and female, eventhough it's geared towards women).

thought the same thing.

but we are lucky, since we are targetting for deaf education/culture........we are focusing on the ASL dept and deaf community, and organizations....... there is a lot of hearing people that take ASL classes and interested in joining......

what is your philantrophy......maybe you can focus those who share the same goals/ideals.

We aren't affiliated. Our college doesn't allow GLO's, but hopefully the college will see that the Sisterhood is a wanted organization and give us a chance to be recogized as a social sorority.

Our Sisterhood has goals. One of them is to attain a group average GPA of 3.0

wow...

I totally feel ya on this subject! It is really hard getting girls that are commited. DXI (Delta Zeta Xi) started last semester and we had up to 11 girls that would be founding sisters. We're trying to hang on to the eight we have now. Recruitment went alright and was fun but we ended up getting about three girls who are really interested. We, I, really wanted to start our Alpha class strong...but we are really happy with the girls we got. We havn't set a date for giveing bids because we're hoping for more girls-though it'll have to be in a couple of weeks. As far as getting our names out, we have like no money in our account right now. Dues are due in on Sunday but to order shirts and all that good stuff, it takes boku bucks. We thought about getting sponsors but we don't know how to go about doing that.
I like the ideas you all have thrown out. I was actually thinking about throwing a Luau (did I spell it right :). We were going to have a Toga Party but the other sorority on campus heard about it and announced having one before we could get word out. We would also like to do some fundraisers for our philanthropies...but I dont' have a clue as to how to go about it. I've heard of dance-a-thons, 5k runs...how dose one organize that??? :) All your help is really appreciated!
DXi till I Die!

well you could have a pizza fundraiser....... talk to the pizza place and they will give like 25 percent of the total to your organization. I know some other business have the similar deals.

I tend not to like movie nights, just because it seems like PNMs and actives would spend more time watching the movie than getting to know each other -- and that's why they're there, right? I think that some activity where PNMs and actives can interact while doing it is better. The BYOB (bring your own banana) banana split night is always fun!
