Hand signal/salute thingy
I couldn't find any pictures online, but what's the deal with the salute that I've seen pictures of where girls take their right arm, sort of cross it across their chest, and make a sort of salute across the forehead with the palm facing up? There's a picture of it somewhere in the Anchora if I didn't explain it well. Anyway, we never did that in my chapter...does it have any sort of meaning or history?
|
I think that was started at the University of Florida. I think its supposed to be a wave, keeping with the whole nautical theme
|
Why does DG have a nautical theme?
|
Because our symbol is the anchor. We sorta took that and ran with it
|
James,
On the heels of the explanation above, the anchor is the ancient symbol of hope. The DG badge (a loooong time ago) was formerly an "H" for Hope. Then it was changed to the anchor, being an ancient symbol for hope. And from there, the anchor thing spawned the whole "nautical" theme. |
Thank you. Thats pretty cool:)

oooooooooooooook
My $0.02.....
i think it looks kind of silly. Honestly, I'd wondered why too, but I was just ::shrugs:: somewhat ok with not knowing...it just wasn't one of those things that i was too concerned with knowing........ :-) I always figured it was just our twist on the navy salute thing (that way it wasn't considered mocking them or anything) but i think it just looks kind of forced and uncomfortable..... now I know, eh? ~*~Mandie~*~ |
I think they're trying to make a "Gamma" letter (the upside down L). If you look at the picture, I'll bet somebody beside her is forming a "Delta" triangle with their hands or arms.

Yes!

im from the eta delta chapter at the univ of north florida and we learned this from the DG women @ UF!!!
it is BOTH a "Delta" and a "Gamma" in one...which is why we do it. i personally think its cute when we all do it for pictures because no one else really knows what the heck we are doing :-) |
