Questioning Majors
Since someone posted about questioning her membership in her GLO, I'm wondering how many people have questioned their majors (or even minors). I certainly did, but stuck with it because I didn't want to delay my graduation. Also, if you could start fresh once again, what would you major in? While I wouldn't give up my history major, I probably wouldn't have picked drama to go along with it. I might have, instead done Classical Studies (think about it: Chinese History and Roman/Greek History...aka Great Civilizations of the World) or maybe Art History or Economics.
Oh well, what's done is done. I graduated almost 2 years ago. |
I loved my majors (Architectural Studies and Urban Affairs). I never questioned them, 'cause I knew that's what I love more than anything--the various things that make large cities different from small towns. My school is very permissible regarding electives (no required classes outside one's major), so we were able to dabble in various things--it was nothing to hear of engineering students taking a sculpture class.

Well well well. .. unless you are doing a technical major it really doesn't matter much unless your major is your avocation (what you love) in which case you probably learned more on your own than you ever did in a water downed class environment.
Most people don't work in their majors anyway, cept for generic silly things like "Business". Honestly if you pick anyway field and read 20 books on it you have much more information than the average college graduating major :) |
I would have majored in film studies or theater instead of journalism.

I loved studying the stuff that went with my fashion major, but I never intended to actually use it after I graduated...because my parents always told me that people almost never work in the field they major in anyway. But if I had it to do over again, I would go with education; everyone talked me out of it when I was picking a major because only "stupid" people who "can't do anything else" do education, so I picked something I thought would be a fun subject to learn for 4 years. Funny, I'm going back to school to get the education degree because I found out during my senior year that that's what I really like to do. Besides, it's hard to get a Real Job in historic costume.

Not only did I question my majors, I changed them. ;) I've been a political science major from day one, and that's been paired with everything from software engineering to economics. What can I say, I'll have a well-rounded education. :p

I started off as a chemistry major, and graduated with my BS in chemistry. Hell yeah, I wanted to change my major! My first semester freshman year I was surrounded with people whose majors were General Studies and Education. Their work loads were half of mine and it sucked cause I never got to hang out and do fun things with them. I'm glad I stuck with it though, cause I really enjoy it and I am making a pretty penny!
(In no way am I trying to say that those people aren't making money with their degrees. So don't get carried away people and start flaming!) :p |

I started out as a biology major, then switched to German, then added a geography double...it'll take me 5 years to graduate but mostly just because I'm studying abroad this year. If I have time I'm going to add an environmental studies minor.
|
I've been an English major, because I love words and love to write and wanted to get my Phd and teach.
However, I'm considering switching my major to occupational therapy. It's quite a switch, and I haven't decided yet. . . . I dont' know what to do! |

I considered switching majors a few times but decided to just stick it out because I love writing as well, but grad school has been a nightmare for me. I wish I'd either taken Fashion Merchandising or Historical Preservation...my interests are all over the place. |
I would have minored in Theatra. I only have 5 more classes to complete but that will delay my graduation date, and that just can't happen. *sigh*
