Gre Tips

Hey Bruhs and GC Peeps

I'm looking to take the GRE sometime in April. For those who have taken the test do you have any success strategies you would like to share?

Bring 'em on! I'm planning to take it sometime in August or September.

I have a book that I bought called "GRE for dummies" that you might wanna take a look at. I think you'll like it.

I like the Princeton Review's "Cracking the GRE". I'm taking them on Tuesday, God willing.

I've taken both the GRE and LSAT (I went to Grad school and am now in law school) and I recommend the workbooks typically found at Barnes and Nobles. The most important thing, I think, is to become familiar with the question styles, learn the strategies for handling each type of question in a timely fashion, AND DO PRACTICE TESTS!!! :) I took the GRE online and you can't use the "skip-a-hard-question" approach for that so I recommend looking for tips on taking the test online if you are taking it online. If you have the choice, I recommend paper.

With the LSAT, I did all of the above, and took Kaplan. It was well worth the money. They really teach you all of the tricks for getting your score up and, if you do your lessons and keep up, 9 times out of 10, your score will be greatly improved for it.
You can write it off as an educational expense (or better - your company, if you are working, may pay for it).

Callis,
I would echo the same things. I took the test dec. of 2002. Using a practice book w/ disc set is helpful. Also, take your time writing on the essay section. In addition, be mindful of your time, it will be over before you know it. Good Luck Bruhs! (I will be starting grad. school in the fall.)-Thank God!:D

Oh my God - an essay section???? http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung...smiley-003.gif

Yup, they replaced an old section with an essay. The test was changed about a year and a half ago. It wasn't that bad. The only thing is that you have to wait for the essay results, the other scores come automatically when you finish. BE EASY

I used this same book and it really prepared me. It tells you exactly what you need to know....no "fluffy" stuff to try to intimidate you. It doesn't really tell you what's on the exam but prepares you for the types of questions and how the exam is formatted.

I took the LSAT and the GMAT this past fall. Both the GRE and the GMAT are now computerized and in some centers, administered together. There were people next to me taking the GRE while I took the GMAT. The best piece of advice that I can offer is to get comfortable with the testing software way in advance. Learn what the different buttons do so that you can skip over the instructions completely and just get to work. Also, if there are essays as part of the test, I suggest working on your typing skills.

I agree. When I was in undergrad, my school had a copy of the software, which allowed me to do practice exams online. It's really important to practice this way if you are taking the test online. The strategies are all different b/c like I said before, you can't do things like conquer all the easy questions first. This software (and correspondingly, the online practice tests) might be available for free on campuses near you or at your neighborhood library.
