Graduate Membership
 

Hello Ladies,

I am very interested in becoming a graduate member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc. I understand that graduate membership is by invitation only. What I don't know is how one finds out about Alpha Kappa Alpha's alumnae events. I would like to show my support for the organization's alumnae events in my area, but I have been unable to find this information anywhere (i.e. the web, local newspapers, etc.). I really would like some insight on the appropriate way to express interest at the graduate level. I visited the national website and retrieved the contact information for alumnae chapters in my area, but I am unsure about whether or not I should write a letter asking for a calendar of events. Would this go against protocol? Do you have to know an alumnae chapter member in order to be invited to events they are sponsoring? Any assistance members can give on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Are you involved in community service activities? What about your local church? I ask these questions because once you become active in your community, surely you will have an opportunity to meet one of my sorors. At this point, you may have an opportunity to ask them about their chapter events.

I must agree with my soror Supermodel1908. It is imperative that you are actively involved some type of community service in your neighborhood. Your local church is probably one of the best places to find Alpha Kappa Alpha women too. We like to get our PRAISE on!! Being active in organizations such as the NAACP, Urban League, Links, professional organizations, etc. is another way to come across the phenonmenal women of the Pink & Green. I would think that chapters would use the newspaper, radio, and TV for public activities that are going on or at least they do in my part of the country. Good Luck.

OneDay, I am also interested in membership at the graduate level. I agree with SuperModel1908, when she mentions getting involved if you aren't already with your community. A year ago I volunteered with a program which promoted higher education to middle-school students. The program NEEDED commited volunteers, and this is why I called. Also because I am an advocate for higher education......anywho, after a month or so, one of the co-directors offered me a ride to one of the schools, and didn't her license plates have AKA on it!!! How nice was that. Again, If you get involved, or stay involved, you will be pleasantly surprised ;-) Believe THAT !!!

The last posts have been very informative for me, however I have a problem. I'm a private person when it comes to my community service. I like to do things that are very personal. I help out in nursing homes alot and my mother says that they take volunteers in the neo-natal unit at her hospital so I'll be doing that this summer. I noticed all the organizations named are very big and open. I like what I'm doing now, but like Oneday, I either have to pledge with a city chapter or wait until grad. school and I want to find members of AKA. But Washington DC (where I am now) and New York City (where I'm going for grad.) are BIG communities. Should I try more public activities so I have a better chance of finding women that are AKA's?

You should extend yourself to the community in areas that your work can have the most benefit to others. Also, do consider your own strengths and talents. If you have a nack for orking in small areas, by all means do that. Do not choose a service activity based on your desire to pursue membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha women are diverse in their talents and abilities. I'm sure, that over time, with a committed effort towards service on your part, you will meet alot of interesting people. Possibly even some of my dynamic sorors.

I resurrected this topic because this is something that is pressing to me.

I wanted to know if there is any advice you all could give to us seeking, searching, for graduate membership.

I feel like it is a whole different world than undergrad and I just some pointers. I am doing community service, and I am very active in my local ministry. I just want to be better prepared if she(AKA)comes looking for me (please, oh please!)

WOW, this post answered so many of my questions!!! However, I do have another question. I live in a very small town with very few members and the those members are inactive. I do plenty of service in my community, but I'd like to get more involved with the closest chapter in my area. However, their website is never updated. Would it be okay if I called or emailed them about upcoming events that I could participate in? Just wondering. Thanks again for all of your help.

I have a question that is similar to this topic...
I am an undergrad student (junior). Last year, I returned to school after a long break. I am 37 years old. I would like to pledge AKA in the fall, but I do not know how I will be received by the sisters.
An Alpha friend told me to wait until I graduate next year and try to get in by invitation with one of my friend or relatives that is already an AKA...
I would not mind pledging, but I don't want to be voted out because of my age.
I would gladly welcome any suggestions.
