2..3..4 times a legacy?

I was just wondering if anyone else has been a legacy to more than one group? My family is very VERY greek....

My mom & one of my aunts are Kappa Kappa Gammas
My maternal grandma is an Sigma Kappa
My paternal grandma & two of my aunts are Alpha Xi Deltas
My stepmother is a TriDelta...(though I'm not sure if that would have made me a legacy)

Both my grandfathers and my dad are Sig Eps

And I (obviously!) chose Delta Gamma:)

My little sister has it MADE!!!

Do cousins count?

1 cousin = Phi Mu
1 cousin = Sigma Alpha Epsilon
1 cousin = Acacia
2 cousins = Sigma Chi

3 cousins (who happen to be genetic sisters) are all Sigma Alpha's like me. I know you asked for legacies in more than one group, but thought I'd throw this one in. ;)

That's all that I'm aware of.

DGqueen17 01-23-2004 12:09 AM

I would have listed my cousins but that would take FOREVER!

Every group has different definitions for what is considered a legacy but I would doubt that having a cousin in a group makes you one. I can speak only for Pi Beta Phi, but we define legacy as having a sister, mother or grandmother. Step-sister, half-sister, Step-mother or step-grandmother is not automatically a legacy but chapters may vote to include such blended family relationships the same.

I pledged as a legacy since my sister is also a Pi Phi in the same chapter.

I agree that every group has a different definition of a legacy. I'm bummed 'cause I have 2 nieces and they're not considered legacies.

But think about it - if you have a girl coming to your recruitment who says "My aunt was an XYZ" won't you be likely to give her more consideration?

Different organizations have different rules. Some are very wide-open (I guess to encourage higher numbers) and some are of course lower.

With Sigma Nu, a legacy is defined as any man who is a collateral or lineal ascendant of whom is or was a brother in the Fraternity or any man, the uncle or great uncle who is or was a Brother in the Fraternity.

I guess by those rules, I could have only been a Phi Kappa Sigma and Sig Ep legacy.

I wouldn't say that Sigma Alpha considers counsins to be legacies. Don't know that we really have a definition for it. Besides cousins is the closest thing I've got. My mom and grandmothers didn't go to college. Neither did my brothers and my sister, who did go to college, seemed to be anti-Greek.

Legacies are generally sisters, daughters, or grand daughters, however my chapter gave special consideration to nieces, and cousins. I think we also consider step-daughters to be legacies. We had the step daughter of a alum who is very active with our chapter got through recruitment and we considered her a legacy just like we did the other girls whose biological moms were ADPis.

My aunt was a Kappa Kappa Gamma at Oklahoma State and I'm sure my cousin will go KKG too (her step daughter). My grandpa was a Lambda Chi pledge but never got initiated. Maybe it's because he got them on probation for an entire year (AS A PLEDGE!!!) ?????? Any of you LXAs out there wanna here the story, PM me, it's hillarious. Hmmmmmmmmm.....

I didn't really have any other family members in the Greek system. I guarantee you that one day my kids will be though!!!! :)

DGqueen17 01-23-2004 01:14 AM

I always wonder if my sis will choose something she's a legacy to or go for something completely different like I did. I'm glad when I pledged my mom didn't make me feel like I had to go Kappa. She told me that I'd know what was right and that's how I found my DG's:)

ADPiZXalum 01-23-2004 01:18 AM

That's so great that your mom had that feeling!! I remember last year a girl who I got to know really really well during recruitment and I thought was in the bag for ADPi ended up going XYZ instead. I was pretty crushed but not so much when a few months later she told me how much she loved our chapter and wished she could've joined it. She told me that her mom was an XYZ though and said she wouldn't pay for her sorority dues if she joined anything else. Isn't that sad?

DGqueen17 01-23-2004 01:24 AM

That isn't cool at all. All chapters are sooo different. My mom just told me that I should go into it as if I wasn't a legacy to anything. That way I got to know all the girls at all the houses.

I hate when parents do that to their kids. I don't think you should force your kids to do things your way when it involves joining an organization or chosing a college. Your kids are not always exactly like you.

AGDee 01-23-2004 09:53 AM

True, your kids aren't always like you, and the chapter at the University they attend isn't always like yours was. I will encourage my daughter to go where she feels most comfortable, but at the same, I will hope deep in my heart that it's AGD.

im a legacy to alpha chi omega (my mom) and if i had gone to a school with a chapter, i honestly dont think i would have made it known that i was a legacy... i would almost feel as if they may be taking me becuase they felt obligated, not becuase they truly wanted me... ive seen that happen in chapters at my school and the legacy frequently ends up de-pledging and rushing again the following year to find a better home.

My Paternal Great-Grandmother-AOII at UTK
My Paternal Grandmother-AOII at Newcomb College of Tulane
My other Paternal Great-Grandmother-Theta at Newcomb(I just found this out, she was initiated in 1919!)
My Paternal Great-Aunt-Theta at Newcomb(I just found this out she was initiated in 1921 and was a national officer in the late 1920s and early 1930s, some sort of secretary!)
My Paternal Great-Grandfather-Phi Gamma Delta at UTK
My Paternal Grandfather-Delta Tau Delta at Tulane
My Dad-Delta Tau Delta at LSU
My younger sister-AOII at Ole Miss
My Paternal Great Uncle-Delta Upsilon at Carnegie Mellon
My mom-AOII Alumnae Initiate, Ole Miss, February 29, 2004! (In about a month she will join with myself and my sister!)
My Maternal Grandfather-Was in a Medical Fraternity at Tulane, not sure of name but I guess that does not really count.
My first Cousin-DEKE at Alabama currently
My first Cousin-Tri Delta at UGA
My second cousin-Chi Omega at Ole Miss currently
My second cousin-Kappa Delta at Ole Miss currently
My second cousin-AOII at South Alabama
My dad's two sisters-Kappa's at LSU

At my chapter of AOII we would consider someone with an aunt, cousin, or step-mother legacy a courtesy. They would be treated with respect but their placement on the Bid Day list would be different. Obviously relations to sisters, mothers, grandmothers, etc would be considered a legacy and are placed at the top of our bid day list.

Wow, a lot of people have a lot of Greek ties! I guess maybe it's the area I'm from, but none of my family or my friends' parents are Greek. I'm the first (but I'm hoping to be the beginning of a long list of legacies:) )
