This is interesting
Students disciplined for award campaign
OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) -- Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award." |
Hmm, this is interesting. However, the boy is from South Africa, making him an African-American, technically. Its another one of those strange categorical situations we find ourselves in since American society INSISTS on squeezing everybody into one group or another.
I think about this quite frequently and am not sure about how other Black Americans on this board feel but although I love and honor the land of Africa as the land of my ancestors, I have never been there and have to admit that I don't even know as much as I should about the contintent. (Though I am trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can for my own self fulfilment) I am American, period. The boy is African-American and I'm sure if I can see that, those school officials could and I don't understand why those kids were disciplined, unless, of course, they had some malicious intent. The article sort of spoke against that being the case. Perhaps the school, and the larger society, should take a closer look at this situation as I see this possibly coming up all over the place since Africa is the native land to people of all colors. Maybe the school should have called their display "Outstanding BLACK American Week" or whatever it was called. |
