non-christian sorors
 

I just was wondering if there were any sorors out there who are not christian - Muslim, Rasta, Buddhist, other. I for one am Muslim and I know I'm not the only one out there. I just would like for other sorors to realize the differences in the members of the sorority when doing different activities- prayers in particular. We don't all believe Jesus was the son of god or god himself- but we do all believe in god. We're all sisters and must remain inclusive in our sorority activities.
I realize more and more how diverse our sorority is and how much we are growing. Skeeeeee Weeeeee

Soror, you're more that welcomed to post positive, motivating, religious and uplifting prayers from the Koran if you would like... I personally would not mind if a soror decided to do that. Sometimes, one needs to deal with things from a different spiritual perspective...

I couldn't imagine how difficult it is for you as a soror of a "historically Christian based" organization such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. And most of our founders were Christians as you are well aware. However, just like you said, our Sorority has become Global and should affirm the spiritual backgrounds of others.

So as a Christian, I must sincerely apologize of my oversight... I hope you will accept it.

I personally am a christian but, I know quite a few Sorors that are practicing Muslims. You are truelly correct in our sororities growing differences these days. How exactly do you deal with the responses that you get when someone finds out that you are an AKA and Muslim? Just wandering b/c of some of the comments that are said to my friends that are Sorors and Muslim also.

Well, I'd really like to meet those Muslim sorors you know. It is obvious that I'm Muslim and I guess when people in my immediate Muslim community - the one on campus - found out I pledged some were probably just confused- well I really don't know how all of them really feel. Some people don't view sororities and fraternities as a positive thing at all. Some people I think, believe it is some sort of cult. they think the secrecy is evil or something. I simply explain that its secret cuz its non of your business or concern. But most of them don't understand the least bit about being greek. One sister who I was really cool with before just gets colder to me as the time passes. Some have a problem with us being out on the yard fridays doing our songs- I'm pretty... and all the rest. Two said its not modest. It ain't easy that's for sure. Not everyone understands. But, my biggest issue is within my chapter. like Monet said, I really should not just sit disturbed while everyone is prayed for but me. it is my sorority too. Luckily, I do have one friend here who is Muslim and greek, but belongs to another sorority. she has had her problems. Allah knows, it aint easy. AKA aint easy and being Muslim aint easy either. But I don't want to live without either one. Leaders never have it easy.

One of my bridesmaids who is a childhood friend and soror (same undergrad chapter, too) is Muslim. Her father is a member of Omega Psi Phi, and her two younger sisters are members of AKA as well.

During Founders' Week, we always attended a Christian worship service together as a chapter, and she was always there. However, we were always sensitive to her religion and suggested that we worship with her.
