Dubya putting flowers on MLK's Grave?!
 

Now, those that know me know that I usually don't let little stuff erk me or get bent all outta shape over things I can't control. Buttttttt..

Did anybody else get offended at George Dubya putting flowers on MLK's grave other than me?!

MLK was a man who was a pacifist in the truest meaning of the word. Dubya is about as anti-peace as an American President can get. It was a pure photo op like when the GOP showed all 8 Black People at the GOP Convention the year Dubya got elected.

Two: I know my people are politically aware and active. So, I'm sure some of you saw the State of the Union address last night. Dubya is a hypocrite. He stated his "concerns" about steroid use amongst today's atheletes and the bad example it sets for the kids. WELL... WHY DON'T YOU STOP YOU KIDS FROM PILL POPPIN' DUBYA?!

I'm voting for Al Shapton !!! *sigh*

About as offended as hearing about black folks getting into a knife fight during a MLK event :mad:. On MLK blvd no less.

THIS offends me more. What also offends me more:
Black folks who don't vote
Black folks who use the n-word--loud and in public--around white folks
Black folks who have multiple children by different partners and abuse/don't provide for them
Black folks who value bling bling over education

I could go on and on....Dubya (and no, I am not a closet Repub) was doing what all politicians do: photo op, plus we, the American taxpayers, got to pay for the side trip (read real reason) which was a major fundraiser while he was in the ATL.

He was in a no win situation either way. If he had not come, he would have been dogged out by black folks for joining only the ranks of Reagan in NOT putting a wreath on his grave. He goes, and folks are mad too.

Eclipse, you know that you are preaching to the congregation -- I am a registered independent voter (in Kollyfornia, we call them "decline to state.") I'm also offended by all of what you stated and repeat: We must get our own house in order. If we don't have a modicum of self-respect and end the nihilism, how do we expect others to respect us?

I agree. I can't get mad at G.W., when a lot of us don't take seriously or even USE the many opportunities (education, exercising our right to vote) that Dr. King and other civil rights leaders fought bitterly for.

My mother, who is 76, cannot understand the anti-education mentality that's taken root in many parts of the AfAm community. It outrages her.

She grew up in South Carolina and attended segregated schools until she was 12 or so, when she moved up to New York City to live with my oldest uncle and his family.

That woman prizes education. She went to Howard University, but ran out of money and dropped out before meeting my Dad. But she got her bachelor's in 1977 through night school, when I was 13, to set an example for us.

Okay my issue with the State of the Union address was all the clapping and standing. It was as if they were just glad he could form a complete sentence. After every sentence his supporters started clapping and stood. It was really working my nerves because he really wasn't saying much at all. All I heard were proposals with no plan to initiate any effective change.

As far as the President putting flowers on the grave of Dr. King, I believe he received his just due when they booed him.

As for the president, I also think he was in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I'm interested in hearing how you think he should have handled it, and I hope y'all don't mind my crashing your board.

Well, I believe he should have given the state of the union instead of using this as an opportunity to begin his campaign!!

Like others, I cannot watch that man speak. It infuriates me. However, I read the address in today's paper.

If he really wanted to honor Dr. King, he should have not chosen King's birthday last year to speak against affirmative action. What he should have done was sign an Executive Order banning racial profiling.

Great point. Like I said, the wreath laying thing was a photo op. Nothing more or less. Oh...and an opportunity for the taxpayers to pay for the real reason he was here--a fundraiser!

Why not?? King stood for judging people on the content of their character...not on the color of their skin....which is what affirmative action does....

It's rare anymore to find national politicians who act truly, and solely, out of conviction. Over time, people can usually spot transparency and it appears the peeps in the ATL feel they did just that with Mr. Bush.
