Janklow's legacy
 

What is everyone's opinion on the guy? I assume since a Democrat is the Governor of South Dakota that he will apoint a Democrat to replace him.

PIERRE, South Dakota (AP) -- Whether they loved him or hated him -- and few seemed neutral -- South Dakotans will notice when Rep. Bill Janklow leaves the political stage he has dominated for nearly three decades.

Janklow's resignation from Congress takes effect Tuesday, six weeks after the former four-term Republican governor was convicted of manslaughter, speeding and running a stop sign in an August 16 accident that killed a motorcyclist

He will be replaced by special election. I think I heard there are a number of Republicans and one Democrat running.

I can only go by a comment from a Political Science Professor from S.D. who told NPR that he hopes that in the long run, the man's legacy will be the many great things he did for the state as opposed to this single incident.

Of course, the incident (DUI, speed, red light as I recall) was inexcusable.

Sounds to me like a real pompous SOB that thinks he's above the law.

Yeah, NPR had some quotes that made this guy sound evil...

We do a fair amount of work in S.D., so this story caught my eye and I've been kind of following it.

I don't know whether he's pompus or not, but he was apparantely driving somewhere after drinking, ran a red light and hit and killed someone on a motocycle. I think he was speeding as well.

He is a former governor who was in his first term in the US House of Representatives -- and, according to the Poly Sci Prof. I talked about above, a pretty good public servent.

I don't know anything more, but he's not the first person to be stupid in a car after drinking too much. If that defines him as "above the law," he's not alone, unfortunately.

He is at least smart enough to resign from the House, as opposed to some CongressPersons who try to hold onto their seats (no pun intended) after being convicted of crimes.
