My chapter had nominations tonight, and I wanted to run for MAL, but there are two others running against me, so it's kind of intimidating. I really really really want this position, but I am scared I won't get it.
I understand that the MAL has to be strict and enforce the rules as well as be organized and take attendence. But, I need pointers to help me for my speech. What do you think are important qualities that the MAL should have?

Definitely unbias and fair and somewhat tough I mean remember rules exist for a reson and please use them ! One of my biggest things is people having exceptions being made for them all the time... if your GPA is low or you owe money the chpater needs to stick to the privleges being revoked that are stated will be revoked when sisters aren't in good standing... but also don't be power hungry and authoratian... just fair... I mean it's fair someone not paying doesn't participate in things that other sister's money is paying for ...it's not necessarily fair to ban them for EVERY single event ya know what I"m saying ??

Hi,
As the outgoing MAL for Iota Gamma (I graduate in May, woo hoo), I can say that impartial and fair are two things that should be at the forefront.

You also have to be prepared to be the bad guy sometimes. It ain't always easy. The MAL sometimes has to be the bad one and take disciplinary action. It helps when you have an awesome J-Board like the Iota Gamma J-Board. You have to be willing to listen to all sides and not make personal judgements. The good of the chapter and the good of Phi Sig is what counts.

So, the qualities that I think are important are:

fair
unbias/impartial
dedicated
organized (spread sheets and MS Excel are wonderful things)
knowledgeable about the rules (both local and national)
willing to ask for guidance if you aren't sure

That's my 2 cents.

I think Glitter and Scooby made excellent points and I agree with them a hundred percent.

I just wanted to add, something I would like in a MAL, is not only the skills mentioned above but the ability to rewarded sisters for upholding the standards of sisterhood. (theta mu) has 2 awards given out monthly for 80 and 100% sisters. I think this helps with the motiviation of the chapter. Also, since the MAL can sometimes be looked at as the 'bad-guy', it helps giving out monthly rewards because it shows that you are also supporting the positive actions sisters do. Even though you should never be look at as the 'bad-guy', because you are just doing your job as a sister, but you know, its real life... so it happens. Also, this helps not only the chapter, but the image of the MAL.

Good luck!

thanks ladies for your help. I am going to try to write a really good speech and take into consideration what you have suggested. I really want to be MAL!
