Why would jewish (Oops, capitalize Jewish) GLO steal Christmas decorations?

U of Rochester Frat May Be Disciplined

(WROC-TV)
Fraternity brothers at the U of R could be disciplined for allegedly swiping holiday yard decorations from some homes in Brighton.
Thousands of dollars in Christmas lights and ornaments were stolen at the beginning of December. On New Year's eve, security guards found them inside the Sigma Alpha Mu house.
A board at the school will determine what, if any sanctions, there will be against the fraternity.

(Post subject corrected by poster, proving he's not a biggot or bigot).

Not all Sammy chapters are predominantly Jewish. Don't make assumptions, and do capitalize all religions.

Why did they do it? No matter what the religious makeup of the chapter is, those actions are contrary to the teachings of all major religions. The reason is probably similar for any fraternity chapter that commits illegal activities. If you want to know, get the police report.

Rudey 01-18-2004 04:34 AM

One might argue that Sammy really isn't Jewish anymore.

Hm, did not see anything about being Jewish in this post. Just reporting a Fraternity stealing house decorations.

Well unless someone has a preconcieved idea of the SAM being just a Jewish Fraternity!

Is there really anymore racial and religious True Greek Organizations?:D

EM1843 01-18-2004 12:00 PM

It was in the Subject line, Tom.

True, but Tom is right, it wasn't in the "report" -- which the subject line may or may not be a part of.

Russell and Rudey are correct regarding the religious makeup of Sammy -- while it was a predominately Jewish fraternity for many years -- including when I was in college -- that's not true of many chapters today.

We learn something every day

From SAM home page:

"
The eight Founders of Sigma Alpha Mu were all of the Jewish faith, and it naturally followed that they attracted to their brotherhood men of similar background. They believed in fraternalism among Jewish college men, convinced that without it, a large number of Jewish students would be deprived of the pleasant associations and companionships they now find in most colleges.

Sigma Alpha Mu has always acknowledged with deep appreciation its Jewish heritage and the ethical values of Judaism which have enriched its life and the lives of its members. With the advent of the mid-twentieth century, expressions of liberalism suggested that constitutional limitations of membership to any particular religious group was not in keeping with the ideal of democracy which had always been part of the Fraternity's creed. Thus, responsive to this thinking, Sigma Alpha Mu at its 1953 Convention amended its constitution, making eligible for membership any male student of good moral character who respects the ideals and traditions of the Fraternity."

Why did you capitalize "Christmas" and not "jewish?" Why did you even bring up religion? Where was religion mentioned in the article? I know Sammy members, and not all of their chapters have a Jewish majority anymore. Why don't you call Sammy HQ on Tuesday and ask them. You're wrong, and a biggot.

The Sammy chapter at my school is predominately jewish as is AEPi and APES (fallen AEPi chapter). You need to relax man, he was not being biggoted in anyway. I do think however you are a little oversensitive, no offense intended.

He was completely being biggoted. Why even mention religion? It wasn't mentioned in the article.

. . . .

"It" -- the word "Jewish" -- does NOT appear in the headline (or the story) on the web site of WROC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Rochester, which the original post credits with the "report." See

I'd take a deep breath, count to ten and think a little before I accused anyone of being biggoted.

You don't know that to be true in this case, do you?

During my undergraduate days, I knew Sammy as a Jewish fraternity. If I had not kept up somewhat with the chapters on my Alma Maters' campus, I would probably still think it is a Jewish fraternity. It is a logical error to make.

That misunderstanding would make the question which is the subject of this thread absolutley logical.

As for the capitalization issue, while you are correct that a religion should begin with an upper case letter, in reality, the subject line here doesn't contain references to two religions -- rather to one religion and one holiday.

While Hoosier should have capitalized both, there may be other reasons why he didn't. They could range from simple oversight to a shift key that didn't work or wasn't held down long enough. I do that all the time.

In my eye, none of this makes him a biggot.

Munchkin03 01-18-2004 07:22 PM

What's a biggot?

Hoosier almost always brings race and religion into hazing incidents. I've learned the beauty of ignoring it...

DeltAlum 01-18-2004 07:32 PM

It is my strong impression -- although I don't have the time to revisit all of the posts, and don't intend to do so -- that most of Hoosier's posts are simply copied from some news source, generally without comment at all.

You can easily find them in places like Fraternal News to which I subscribe online.

I and others have occassionally objected to a poorly worded subject line.

That still doesn't make a biggot.
