dumb question

ok... i feel really foolish- but what exactly is a sweetheart? like- i see TKE sweetheard 2003 or something... i'm figuring your a brothers girlfriend... but what exactly does that entail? lol thanks for filling me in! (we don't have stuff like that in cortland:p )

Glitterkitty 01-17-2004 09:22 AM

It's like being homecoming queen

...except for one fraternity. It's usually one of the girls that hangs around, is really involved in helping out with their rush, philanthropy etc. Sometimes it is one of the brother's girlfriends, but often it is not. My roomie was the Pi Kappa Phi Rose Queen 2 years in a row. She is just the sweetest girl in the world and always remembers everyone's birthday, helps decorate for parties, shows up for rush to help rush new guys and stuff like that. She wasn't dating any of the brothers at the time, nor had she hooked up with any of them. She's is everyone's little sister.

edited for spelling.

I am almost sure it is the girl that sleeps with the most amount of brothers . . . but I imagine it varies from campus to campus.

Oh James, you are such an instigator. :)

On my campus, the sweethearts were the girls who helped out with the fraternities. They were always at the house helping them clean, helping them with rush, and they were friends with almost all the brothers. Many sweethearts have a boyfriend within the fraternity which is why they spend so much time at the fraternity house. While I was a collegiate member, we had sweethearts at Pike, SAE, Sigma Chi, SigEp, Pi Kapp, TKE, and Lambda Chi.

Not Kappa Sig? :(

No. ADPi had a monopoly over Kappa Sig Starduster. :)

Yes, James, Kappa Sig is the only one that matters. :D

Was it like that? Certain sorority houses had generational monopolies on certain frat houses? Almost like a tradition?

ZTAngel 01-17-2004 03:07 PM

In a way, yes. You would tend to see more of a certain sorority at different houses. It would change over the years, of course. For instance, the fraternity that my sorority hung out with the most during my freshman year is not the same one the girls from my chapter tend to hang out with now.
A lot of the monopolies have to do with what fraternity the sorority is doing Homecoming with. Naturally, the girls will tend to hang out with that fraternity more.

The Real Answer

This was not a dumb question. There are a lot of correct answers. Different fraternities will define what there sweethearts are differently. In my fraternity, there are several correct definitions, varying by chapter.

Back in the days of little sister programs, many Phi Psi chapters called their programs, "Sweetheart Programs." That era is, thankfully, gone.

An older definition is some formalized type of girlfriend. Basically, when a Phi Psi pins his girlfriend with the Phi Psi Sweetheart Pin, she is a Phi Psi Sweetheart.

Some chapters may use the more flexible standard of any lady who has our sweetheart song sung to her, while she is in a relationship with a Phi Psi. This is probably the most widely accepted standard, and it implies that she has received a lavalliere, Sweetheart Pin, engagement ring, and/or wedding band from a Phi Psi.

Also, some chapters pick a single lady each year to be that chapter's sweetheart.

Because Phi Kappa Psi forbids our badge to be worn by anyone but a Phi Psi, we do have a dedicated sweetheart pin. In our manual, it is stated that it may be worn by "mothers, sisters, or sweethearts." I'm not aware of any current chapter, where biological mothers or sisters are given sweetheart pins, but I'm sure that these pins are given to house moms.

In addition to our sweetheart pin, which conotes one set of definitions, we have our Sweetheart Song, which implies another:
Quote:

For she is the sweetheart of Phi Kappa Psi,
The girl of all girls most dear;
Hers is the love that will never, never die,
Thru the fortunes and sorrows that come with the years.
Her eyes speak of promise, most tender and true,
Of happiness soon to be,
For there's coming a day
When each Phi Psi sails away
With his sweetheart in Phi Kappa Psi.

A Phi Psi chapter might have several girlfriends who were pinned with the sweetheart pin, an annually chosen chapter sweetheart, a housemom who was given a sweetheart pin, and several girlfriends who were not pinned, but who had the Sweetheart Song sung to them when they were lavalliered.

Rio_Kohitsuji 01-18-2004 03:21 PM

James, you're such a goof :p

A Sweetheart is either a woman that basically helps out the chapter a lot and they nominate her, so she's allowed to wear letters. (Depends on the the fraternity though) Russell's definition answered your question much better than mine, heh

In my case, I'm pinned, it's a fraternity engagement between a fraternity member and his girlfriend. In some Greek systems it goes shirting/lavaliering/dropping, pinning/engagement, marriage.

I'll have to put up the TKE Sweetheart song later, it's sooooooo sweet :D

Munchkin03 01-18-2004 03:24 PM

Our fraternities (surprise surprise) didn't have sweethearts. Regardless of whether or not they were pinned, I don't think most women would have wanted the connotation. Girlfriends didn't hang around the houses that much, either.
