Martin Luther King, Sr.

Wassup yall! I was reading an email that I received and it stated that the father of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an honorary member of Alpha Phi Omega. He pledged at Morehouse College. I would like to know if someone can verify this information to be true.

The Martin L King in the Fraternity records is listed as a brother at Psi Omicron chapter at Morehosue College. Psi Omicron chartered in 1974. While under certain circumstances, I understand the concept of honorary membership for the deceased, 6 years is a bit much...

This was on the APO-L listserv. Please join it if you aren't on it.

Hello Brothers!

Please excuse any cross-posting.

Concerning the confusion with the membership of Martin Luther King at Morehouse College, Psi Omicron Chapter-since this school is in my hometown and following the recent holiday festivities here I thought I would follow up with the National Office on the issue.

The Honorary Membership was conferred on Martin Luther King, SENIOR, not Junior, therefore the member listed in the online membership database was the father of the man that we just call Martin Luther King, or MLK.

Judy Mitchell and Bob London both looked over the original paperwork at the National Office and concurred that the paperwork was for MLK, Sr.

Here is some back-up information:

-Martin Luther King, Sr. was born in 1899. The paperwork says that the recipient was 76 when he was granted this honor in 1975. -Martin Luther King, Sr. died in 1984, so he was still alive to receive this honor. MLK, Jr. died in 1968, whereas the Psi Omicron Chapter was not founded until 1974. -The application was typed and clearly has Martin Luther King, Sr. typed in twice. -The signature seems to be done by a man in his older years. -According to the King Center Librarian that I called today, Martin Luther King, Sr. has a degree from Morehouse as well.

We can possibly conclude that the father stayed involved with Morehouse throughout his life, and that he was involved in some way with the Chapter at the time.

Thanks!

(For some reason I thought APO-L had migrated to the APO Yahoo! group.)

Thanks so much!

How'd you find out about the listserv? I hadn't heard anything about it at my chapter's meetings.

I heard about it through the yahoo group we have for our Region.

Nope. The two lists are totally separate. APO-L remains THE 'semi-official' list. Many of the BoD types send stuff pretty much only to APO-L. Others take it from there to forward these items to chapter, sectional, regional, lists, and sometimes the APO Yahoo Group.
