Silly Superstitions

What's the funniest or wildest superstition you've ever heard? Here are a few of mine.....

1)Messing with old men will give you worms http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

2)Don't spilt a post(if two or more people are walking together everyone should go the same way, not in different directions when you walk around a post or pole)

3)Men shouldn't eat any red gravy/sauce from a girlfriend or her family (voodoo)

4)Don't buy your mate a watch because you're putting a time limit on your relationship

I'm busted so I've gotta go, but do you guys have any?

I have one for you.

Don't buy your mate a pair of shoes, because they will walk out of your life.

Here goes another...

"Don't step on a crack or you'll break your momma's back!"

That came to mind, b/c I just saw Disappearing Acts again, and I remembered Wesley Snipes saying that and was ridiculed for it. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I've been an observer for a few days now, but I wanted to add to the list! My grandmother has always told me never to put my purse on the floor. If you do, you won't get any money.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

My om is always saying that! Another one that goes along with that one is don't give an empty purse or wallet a a gift, you should always add at least dime. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

My grandma has me believing this one and I practice it every year!

Bad luck shall come to you if your Christmas Tree is up on New Year's day.

My tree has to come down by New Year's Eve! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've heard these silly superstitions come out of my grandmother's mouth...

1) Put an ax (yes, an ax) under a baby's bed to keep the "hanks"( nightmares or ghosts, I guess) away.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

2) If you sweep under a woman's feet, she will never get married.

Maybe that's why I'm single... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

3) If your chest itches, someone wants to get with cha'.

4) Put a dime with a hole in it around a baby's neck when they're teething. This supposedly helps them teethe easier.

Oh, I have a few.

You know the saying, "Find a penny. Pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck." Well I heard that you'll only have good luck if the penny is heads up. If the penny is tails up, you should leave it on the ground because it will be bad luck for you.

If you're sweeping the house and you accidentally sweep over someone's foot, you're supposed to spit on the broom before you start sweeping again. Otherwise, you'll have bad luck in your household.

And lastly, on New Year's Eve you're supposed to make sure there is change behind your couch/living room furniture when the clock strikes midnight. If you do, you're supposed to have good luck with money all year. :-)

Hmmm, I bought my current boyfriend a watch for his birthday last year, and he lost it...does that count? :-)

I heard you were supposed to have the person whose foot you swept blow on the broom. That's what my sister always made me do.

If you dream about someone fishing or fish in general, that means someone is pregnant. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

One of my cousin's pert near (think Beverly Hillbillies to understand) had a heart attack when I told her I bought my then boyfriend a watch our first Christmas together. She had a different twist on her's though. She said I was ticking the time away with him. Well, 15 years later he is my husband and although he lost the watch, I still have him!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Some superstitions in my family are:

1. A man must be the first person to enter your house on New Year's Day.

2. Put a cross made of straw from a broom in a baby's head to cure the hiccups.

3. If a bird enters your house he must leave the same way he came in or there will be a death.

You know, my boyfriend bought me a watch for Christmas 1998. We broke up six weeks later so there ya go!

exquizit 03-16-2001 10:27 PM

I have heard everyone of those! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

the only thing is on New Years my family always said be sure to have some sort of money in your wallet, eat cabbage for money(and you hang one good cabbage leaf over each entrance)and black-eyed-peas for good luck!

The fish dream goes all over the place it seems..they even used that one on Soul Food http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

as well as "Don't sweep your trash out the front door" LOl http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
