Opinion of Soap Operas

Who among us thinks that soap operas are a waste of time, airspace, unrealistic, or just plain lame?

I am of this opinion now, though in middle school and high school and the first year of college I was an addict and even taped them while I was at school to watch when I got home.

I was just wondering how many out there in GC land think they are stupid too? :)

I Do! I Do! I Do!
When I was living with my parents I wasn't allowed to watch them. When I went to college I watched them for a couple days because I thought I was missing out on something and then I realized that all they made me do was fall a sleep.

i think they are ridiculously stupid - that doesn't mean i dont watch them tho :)

Me!!!

I was briefly into Days of Our Lives one summer and Young and the Restless another summer, but that's it.

I can't get into them.

I never saw the point of them.

My earliest memory of a soap opera was when I was 3, I think. That was back in the days of Guiding Light, Young and the Restless, Capitol, and As the World Turns. My mom used to be a stay at home mom, and I'd always watch them with her (covering my eyes at the "questionable" times).

I don't think they're stupid at all. Granted, I don't watch my Days and Passions like I used to, but I can think of 23418936146 other shows that shouldn't even be on TV.

Soap operas started as radio shows mostly in the 50s (well, Guiding Light, anyway) to cater to the housewife and to sell products (hello PROCTOR & GAMBLE!)...it's amazing to see how they've come along. Their storylines are sometimes out of this world, but I wouldn't call it a waste of airspace.

Mary - you just haven't found the right soap opera ;)

Actually I'm a Young & the Restless addict. However I don't bother taping it when I'm at work. I started semi-watching it in high school because of my mom. Then when I'd babysit in the summer and the baby would be napping, I'd watch it. Now I watch it if I can - especially this past summer when I'd get home from summer school.

I actually used to watch Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful, As the World Turns, and General Hospital. But now that I'm older, more mature, realize that that is not how reality works, much less relationships.........I find them to be gay, stupid, ridiculous.......etc. I'm now of the opinion, and please keep in mind this is merely my OPINION, so if you disagree vehemently(did i spell that right?) about it, that's perfectly fine......I more and more think that they are shows for lonely housewives(my mother was one) or other people that either dont or cant find something else better to do with their time......but this is just my opinion.

I applaud the fellow GC'ers who have replied to this thread agreeing with me about soap operas being stupid.

I was completely addicted to Y&R for about a year and a half, but then lost interest. While I now think they're silly (and a little slow), I do believe that they're great for those people who just want some "escape" for an hour or so each day. That was pretty much the point of them 50 years ago, and it hasn't really changed.

But why does the word "gay" need to be used as a negative adjective?

Aside from that, I think that the writing in soap operas is some of the most innovative, intriguing, and complex storytelling that there is. I don't watch them all, but I like Days of Our Lives, and keep up with Passions and Young & the Restless.

I'm not going to get continuously sucked into a PC debate, because I'm also of the opinion that all the "PCness" is also starting to get a bit ridiculous and out of hand.

My use of the word "gay" was merely used as an expression, and is not a reference to homosexuality or to put homosexuality in a negative light. So if it has offended you then I am sorry. If it has offended homosexual GC members or lurkers, my apologies, but I'm not editing that out or retracting my comment because that is not how I meant it, and I believe you and whoever reads it knows that. Sorry!

Thanks!

I just grew up watching GH, OLTL, and AMC, so I have history with some of those characters! As for other soaps, I don't like when they go supernatural-- reasons I stopped watching Port Charles and at first I watched Passions til I realized how ridiculous it is.
