best friends grandmother

Ok question. My best friend in the whole universe grandmother died last night/ this morning. She is in Flag. AZ at NAU but will be going down to PHX for her family. Now I too loved her grandma, she acted like my grandma. When she would make her grandchildren chocolate cookies she would make me 2 or 3 sugar cookies becuase she knew I did not eat chocolate. She was a better grandma then my own (seriously).

Now where is my question, I have some money saved up for a rainy day (and it is raining in GA) should I go to PHX to be with her family. The only thing stopping me is that I was laided off from my job (seasonal) and I don't know how long until I have another job, so that money may be needed in Feb. Her family of course knows I a poor right now. Plus I am going down in March (already bought my ticket a couple weeks ago)

What should I do?

Chris

Can you change the date of your March ticket?

No I can't, it was bought with flyer miles, so I can't even cancell it with out be heavily fined, but no changed what so ever are allowed.

can you try to throw some $$ at priceline and get the ticket cheap?

Actually, on many airlines, trips bought with frequent flyer miles are considered full fare tickets and can be changed without penalty. If you aren't absolutely sure, check with the specific airline.

Otherwise, the decision is up to you. I'm sure the family would be pleased to have you there.

Good luck.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

First of all - though you may feel a great desire to be there, you also can't afford it (legitimately). If she were alive you know she wouldn't want you to spend your savings to come visit her...that's just how grandparents are. I suggest taking a little bit of money, buying a card and a flower boquet and have it sent for the funeral.

I know thats probably not the answer you're looking for, but times are tough and without a job, you shouldn't be spending your savings :(

Actually Hootie that is a great answer. Her grandma loved daiseys, so I can get her some from 1-800-flowers or something. I can't believe I did not think of that.

Thanks every one for posting.

Forgive me for seconding this sentiment. Not everyone can make a funeral, even with the bereavement rate. I'm sure you'll select a wonderful arrangement and card.

My sympathies to both you and your best friend.
