No Discrimination Clause
Greetings, Greeks,
I was wondering if someone could post an example, or a link to an example, of a fraternity or sorority policy that specifically says "We will not discriminate against gays." (Other groups may be listed, but I just want to see an example of one that INCLUDES homosexuals in that group. And I only need one example, because I am sure this topic has been beaten to death time and again. Thanks in advance! |

Here is ours:
MULTICULTURALISM AND DIVERSITY AWARENESS POLICY Whereas, Phi Sigma Sigma was founded by a group of friends who at the time could not all join the same sorority because of their varying religious faiths; and Whereas, Phi Sigma Sigma has and always will maintain a non-scripture based ritual; and Whereas, Phi Sigma Sigma’s constitution, bylaws and policies have NEVER tolerated membership selection based on discrimination; and Whereas, Phi Sigma Sigma is a private membership organization for women; and Whereas, candidates for collegiate membership in the Fraternity shall be fully matriculated in an institution where a chapter is located and shall be selected based upon their meeting the eligibility requirements prescribed in the local and national constitutions, and according to the rules set forth by the College Panhellenic Association, the host institution, and the National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements; Therefore be it resolved that membership in each chapter shall be determined by performance, educational achievement and criteria related to the goals and purpose of the fraternity. Membership is open to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, age, handicap, disability, ancestry, citizenship, marital status, sexual orientation or any other classification protected by law or ordinance. Be it further resolved that Phi Sigma Sigma encourages education on the national and local levels with respect to multiculturalism and diversity awareness and advocates sensitivity to such topics as it relates to daily living situations and fraternity activities. Be it further resolved that each Phi Sigma Sigma chapter shall establish a Multiculturalism and Diversity Celebration Committee whose purpose it shall be to conduct an on-going program to develop an understanding and appreciation for cultural and other heritages brought to the group by its membership. |
I know you've gotten your example, but I couldn't leave out the policy of our own Alpha Phi Omega.
This is a clause in the standard Risk Management Policy: SEXUAL HARASSMENT/ ABUSE/DISCRIMINATION The fraternity will not tolerate or condone any form of abusive or discriminatory behavior on the part of its Members, whether physical, mental or emotional in respect to sex, race, ethnicity, physical or emotional handicap, age, marital status or sexual preference. This is to include any actions, which are deemed to be demeaning to all but not limited to date/gang rape or verbal harassment. There's none that I'm aware of for Sigma Nu.
I'd be in favor of it. I do find it kind of humorous for organizations such as most of ours that are highly discriminatory on who enters to have these bylaws that forbid discrimination on certain grounds. While these appeal to our PC nature, they're pretty worthless statements. |
I have a question on this line.
do chapters/orgs have rules on inter-house dating. Like a general statement that sisters are not encouraged to date sisters, only in the idea to keep that drama out of the house? just curious. thanks! |

I imagine some chapters have "no sisters dating" rules in place for the sanity of their other sisters :) , but I doubt there's a national rule about it.

We discussed it as a chapter and never did anything with it. I think one fraternity here asks that actives don't date, not that they'd actually enforce it. But more of a request. I know some co-ed orgs have it.
In terms of people being mature enough... when you put women together they can't always get along. (Unless my chapter is a freak incidents) There will always be girly tiffs and they can be hard. So think for some chapters it is important to talk about it. I"m just curious. |

But then you have the 'everyones an adult, they should be able to be mature and work it out' on the other side. |
My sorority is for Adventist women and in our constitution it says that all members must uphold the Adventist standards.
