Georgia Gets New Flag!
The Senate of the state of Georgia voted this afternoon to change Georgia's state flag. I'm sure that you all are familiar with the flag issue in South Carolina, well Georgia was next on the boycott list. Instead of letting it get that far, the flag was changed. For more information go to the following: http://www.accessatlanta.com/news/forum/flag.html

That is great. Let's all pray for my backwards state to make the same decision.

Who are they trying to fool? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif
The very symbol that was the cause of all the protest is still there!!!!! They just made it smaller. I wonder if that's acceptable to Gorgians? |
I believe the purpose of maintaining a small version of the confederate flag is to chronicle the state of Georgia's history, which included being a part of the confederacy.

Serenity is correct ... they have only made an attempt to 'pacify' not 'rectify' the situation... I don't like the fact that they maintain the negative imagery when the original issue evolved around getting rid of it altogether.
-- They called it a "Compromise Flag" -- Compromise my eye... There shouldn't have an issue of "compromise" in my opinion. But we have to take what we can get right??? Sheesh AKAtude- you do have a point... History is history -- whether it be negative or positve... It all deserves to be remembered. I just ain't feeling it... Hopefully African American Georgians are pleased. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif [This message has been edited by novella000 (edited January 30, 2001).] |

Still, on the other hand, it is a HUGE step towards progress... As long as "we" realized that there are STILL problems in the year 2K1, that's what is most important and what things are being done to continue to combat the ignorance, intolerance and insensitivity. |
Soror Akatude you are absolutely correct. The small flags at the bottom chronicle the history of Georgia. It begins with the first U.S. flag and ends with the current U.S. flag. The flags in the middle are all past Georgia flags.
When I drive onto the campus of the state institution of higher learning where I work, will I be glad to see the new flag rather than that full size Confederate battle flag? YES! Does the fact that a version of the emblem is still on the new flag bother me? No. It is a past state flag. I can't change history, no matter how negative it was. One of the problems with America is the fact that we try to wipe out the parts of history that we don't like and we don't want to talk about it. If there is going to be a representation of all of the old flags, then, in my opinion having the confederate flag as a part of a series of flags chronicling history is in order. It was a part of history. A horrible part, but still a part of it. Having the Confederate flag as "the" state flag is NOT in order. It's sad that it took until the year 2001 for a change to be made. But like Soror AKA2D'91 said - it is a HUGE step toward progress. Who knows, in about 50 more years there may be another new flag. ------------------ Don't just talk about it...Be about it! |

Very True. As we all know change takes time. You can't win the war in one battle. |
Speaking of the problems in 2k1, is anyone from the MD, DC, VA area going to the "State of the Black Community" this weekend?
|
yes, we in GA are glad. i commend gov. barnes for coming up with a senible compromise for the flag. they know we where getting ready to boycott and they did not want to lose all that money.
|
I'm from GA and Part of Ga's history is slavery and the confederacy. I think they made the symbol smaller so we can remember it's(slavery)is not the Biggest part.

There was some "debate" about what type of poll was actually taken. |
They do vote today. I am anxious to see the results...

Well....Ole Miss decided to KEEP the Confederate emblem on their flag. The vote was in favor by a margin of 2 to 1. **shakin' my head**
