locals vs nationals
ok this might be sort of a strange question but it's just something i've been wondering for a while...
Alright, let's say that you join Delta Gamma and become an initiated member as a freshmen. Later, you decide to transfer to another school which does not have a Delta Gamma chapter. Upon figuring this out, you decide to join a local social sorority instead. Say that later your local is offered a charter from another NPC sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha. What happens to you if your local accepts the charter? Obviously, you can't be a part of two NPC sororities according to the rules but do they just kick you out then? It seems unfair because you were just as much a part of the local as any other memeber. There's no real reason for me asking this question... just curiosity. (sorority names were picked at random, by the way) |
you would be able to join a local, but if that local charters with a national different from the one you are already in, then nope, you can't join. if you are still a collegiate, then the chapter will probaly let you hang out and stuff. if you are an alum when this happens, then you will not be eligible to initiate into the new group.

Depending on the vows you took in your specific NPC organization, it might be that you "technically" shouldn't even join the local organization if they are a "social" sorority by nature. I won't claim to know how all organization's vows are written.
Although my organization's vows don't get into every specific situation that you could ever encounter, I interpret the spirit of our vows to mean that I cannot join any NPC or non-NPC greek letter society that is social in nature.... leaving the door wide open to join professional and/or service organizations - but not another social sorority, including this hypothetical local group. Going purely on the NPC level, however, I would agree that if someone chose to join a local at another university that eventually affiliated with another NPC group, that, no, you would not be allowed to initiate into that organization. Hopefully, you'd remain very close panhellenic sisters with those women that you've shared this sisterhood with. |
While it is a great question, I will suggest to you to do a search for this topic before someone gives you a hard time!
As a Newbie, I hope you will underatand what I am saying! If not, you may PM me is if you get a lot of stuff!:) Actually, there are some on This Site Who can and will be more than willing to give you information! Now to your question: Yes If You are a Memeber of an NPC, takling this for Granted, and you then go to another school, and join a Local which goes National, NO You are a Member of Your International The First and if and when your then Chapter wants you to affiliate with a new National, No you cannot as you are already a Member of a National Org! If this makes no damn sense, good, I am goiing to bed!:D |
It does suck... but yeah... I don't believe you wouldn't be allowed to join the ZTA colony with the rest of the local chapter....

This situation is kinda on my campus...
here's the whole story so no one gets confused: Back in 1998, phi sig is the only national sorority on campus (for a couple of years). A group of women approach phi sig about going national and phi sig helps them start another national, ABC*. After doing all the colony work ABC becomes a chapter and the women are initiated. less than a year later, a big group of women from ABC decided they don't like ABC (reasons not relevant) and start a local DEF. DEF wants to become another national: DF But... in order for that to happen they will have to wait till every original ABC (which was more than half of the ABC chapter) that is now a DEF has graduated. (since they wouldn't want to kick out their founders, would they) Now 3 years later, DEF does not have the interest in going DF. (more reasons that aren't relevant) and ABC has since recovered and are doing o.k. *fake names, because I didn't want to upset anyone on here. I know there is the NPC rule about not being in two national sororities, but it might not matter to the local since the rule doesn't exactly apply to them. So even if the original chapter, like ABC, says don't join any other social GLO, you can't really stop them, even if they are bold enough to just go start their own. ETA: to answer your question: I guess if your local was willing to wait till you graduated like DEF was planning on doing, then you should be ok. or maybe you can take an alum status or something. |
A few girls decided they don't like rules, so they deactivated from my chapter and started their own local "sorority". (I quote that, well, because they're not exactly taken seriously) Anyways, if they ever wanted to become a National, every ex-Phi Mu would have to be graduated.
And yes, NPC does state somewhere that you cannot be a member of two NPC sororities, and many individual NPC orgs frown upon that. |
